This technique helps to bind the sonata's sprawling structure into a single cohesive unit, although the architectural powers of the (Someone who plays a musical instrument (as a profession)) musician need to be highly developed to achieve this in performance.
In using this structure, Liszt was obviously influenced by (Austrian composer known for his compositions for voice and piano (1797-1828)) Franz Schubert's Wanderer Fantasy, a work he greatly admired and performed often.

Franz Liszt took the bold risk conveying an unprecedented perspective in his Piano Sonata in B minor, published in 1854.
Liszt begins with a piano introduction in the key of g minor with a pause, and then one note - the "g." Then, there is another pause.
Liszt hints at the irony of this section by making the main theme the third theme, and once in a while we hear the same theme an ominous cackle of the satanic spirit in the background.

Liszt might be the major romantic composer with the longest carrier, and the one who best linked Beethoven to Schoenberg, starting his carrier writing his own version Diabolic Variations and works verging at atonality at the end.
Liszt composed many highly musical works, but there is on the full output at least something abortive, specific works that fall short of certain demands....and this can be explained, and in the comparision to Wagner it contrasts clearer, as a matter balance between the indented and executed idea.
The Liszt transcendental works are actually, as to all I am able to percieve them requiring a great intellectual understanding in first place; i.e having a grasp on the sequences, and how the emotional expressions come out is a secondray to that: i.e how the intellect manages to put the sequences in a tasteful way.

Strauss' sonata is structured around simple motifs, and although being a work from his youth, this piece is surprisingly rich in musical contents and expression.
Liszt's sonata is diabolical, and incorporates all virtuoso elements of the late 19th century, like figured belcanto, octaves, passages, atmosphere-making, and is both lyrical and technical very demanding.
Where Chopin and Strauss both use a relatively 'classical' sonata form, with 4 separate movements in more or less the same sequence (fast-slow-scherzo-finale), the piece by Liszt is a bit more 'weird' in it's form, as all movements are conceived into one uninterrupted big work, where the theme returns in many disguises.

Liszt's concerts were famous for the fainting and swooning of women in the audience, and while Liszt may have played Beethoven in his studio, his public concerts at this period were not short on display music, mainly composed by himself.

Albulescu plays a wider range of Liszt’s other piano music, from the unbuttoned hi-jinks of the Waltz from Gounod’s "Faust", to the sombre and enigmatic processional of the second "La lugubre Gondola", while Houstoun gives us pieces which contrast with the Sonata’s high drama, reflective in mood and largely undemonstrative in means.
Albulescu’s piano is perfectly placed, the biggest climaxes easily contained without harshness or excessive reverberation, and the quieter moments warm-toned and beautifully sustained.
