Piano Sonata No. 29 (Beethoven) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Ludwig van Beethoven's Piano Sonata No. 29 in B flat major, opus 106, known as the Hammerklavier, is widely considered to be one of the defining works of the composer's third period and one of the great piano sonatas.
Marked "with occasional license", the fugue (one of Beethoven's greatest contrapuntal achievements, as well as making incredible demands on the performer) moves through a number of contrasting sections, including such "learned" contrapuntal devices as an inversion of the fugue subject and a retrograde passage in which the original subject is played backwards note-for-note.
It is considered Beethoven's single most difficult composition for the piano and remains one of the most challenging solo works in the entire piano repertoire, to this day.

 NPRN Composer of the Month
Although a number of works pointed in the direction his musical style was to take, his breakthrough work was the piano sonata No. 29, the so-called "Hammerklavier" sonata.
Beethoven's decision to renounce the great love of his life, and with it the pretense that he fundamentally desired such a relationship, was both a morally exalted and inexpressibly painful one.
Beethoven demands a great deal from the chorus that is not conceived for human throats, and so many elements of the composition, expressive in themselves, need to be subordinated to a central vision that most performers find the work something of a maze.

Beethoven was well aware of the difficulties this sonata posed for the pianist and listeners, and even went as far as to suggest that the last movement could be left out altogether in order to make the work more accessible for a London audience.
The adagio, one of the profoundest and longest single movements in all piano music, is followed by a crowning fugal finale to challenge the technique of even a great virtuoso such as Kempff.
