Piano sonata - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In the Baroque era, the use of the term of term "sonata" generally referred to either the sonata da chiesa (church sonata) or sonata da camera ("ordinary" sonata), both of which were sonatas for various instruments (usually one or more violins plus basso continuo).
Although various composers in the 17th century had written keyboard pieces which they entitled "Sonata", it was only in the classical era, when the piano displaced the earlier harpsichord and sonata form rose to prominence as a principle of musical composition, that the term "piano sonata" acquired a definite meaning and a characteristic form.
The 32 sonatas of Beethoven, including the well-known Pathétique Sonata and the Moonlight Sonata, are often considered the pinnacle of piano sonata composition.

Piano Sonata (Liszt) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Franz Liszt's Piano Sonata in B minor (Klaviersonate h-moll), dedicated to Robert Schumann, is widely considered to be his greatest work for the instrument, and one of the seminal works of the Romantic piano literature.
The Sonata was composed in 1852-1853, and first performed on January 27, 1857, in Berlin by Liszt's pupil and son-in-law, Hans von Bülow.
Superimposed upon the four movements is a large sonata form structure, although the precise beginning and endings of the traditional development and recapitulation sections has long been a topic of debate.

Joyce - Music: Pierre Boulez's "Third Piano Sonata"
Because definitive, once-and-for-all developments seem no longer appropriate to musical thought as it is today, or to the actual state that we have reached in the evolution of musical technique, which is increasingly concerned with the investigation of a relative world, a permanent 'discovering' rather like the state of 'permanent revolution'.
The Third Sonata of Pierre Boulez was conceived at a time when composers were questioning the idea of the freedom of the interpreter, after a historical phase, called post-serial, which had laid down, even in its smallest details, the different parameters of musical interpretation.
The original release of the Third Piano Sonata was Guilde Internationale du Disque SMS 2590, 1970, with Claude Helffer on piano.

Raff wrote three piano sonatas, which is hardly unusual in such a pianistic composer.
It was, however, not a case of mere tinkering revisions in old age to a composition from Raff's youth.
The resulting Sonata is, as might be expected, dissimilar to Raff's effective, showy salon piano pieces.

Piano Sonata   (Site not responding. Last check: )
No piano sonata in the late twentieth century could be other than self-conscious.
With so much emphasis on thought and structure implied by the word 'sonata', it would be easy to forget the presence of the word 'piano' in the work's title.
But although the sonata lasts more than half an hour, and makes the strongest demands of concentration on both performer and listener, it is directly and powerfully conceived for the instrument, and its sheer physical relish of the piano is matched by the composer's exuberant references to keyboard literature.

The harmonic languages heard range from the pop oriented clarity of Vernacular Dances (1996) by Charles Griffin and barely clouded functionality of Henry Martin’s Prelude and Fugue XIII—A Slow Drag (1996) to the jazz hued spikiness of
Sonata for Piano (1999) and dissonant East Coast leaning etudes by David Rakowski (though this last is harmonically grounded by employment of ostinato figures and repeated notes).
The music hints at jazz idioms, modernistic sonatas, and spacious, elegiac styles, all the while showing tremendous craft and personality.
