Piano roll music made in 1905 by Mahler, released by the Allegro-distributed, U.K.-based IMP Classics label, contains a piano transcription of a section of Mahler's fifth symphony, along with some of his concert hall songs on which new vocal parts have been overdubbed.
The player piano was such a strong part of the home entertainment market that piano roll makers were even compelled to add a "world music" touch to their catalogs so they could appeal to the recently arrived immigrant populations, especially those from Eastern Europe.
From the turn of the century until the early '30s, piano roll releases fed a broad market of consumers who wanted to hear the pop rhythms of the day and the works of respected classical performers or composers.

 Ingvar Karkoff (1958)
Reich’s Piano Phase is a direct outcome of his work with tape pieces in the mid-sixties where he used phase-shifting.
Piano Phase is here performed in a version for two theorbs.
The arrangement is in fact an augmented version of a transcription for lute solo, where the added bass viol part accentuates the piece’s long lines and atemporal character, creating an almost stationary pedal under the melody.

Amy Cheney Beach Collection Finding Aid
She was best known for her songs, her symphony and her piano pieces and was also recognized for her early contribution to the preservation, documentation and transcription of American birdsongs.
Miss Cheney began composing at the age of four, began her studies at the piano with her mother at the age of six and at seven made her first public appearance- including a few of her own compositions in the program.
In 1871, the family moved to Boston, MA and though her parents were advised that Amy should be sent to a European conservatory, they chose to engage the training of the local instructors Ernest Perabo and Carl Baermann for piano, and one year of instruction in harmony and counterpoint with Junius W. Hill.

Brahms: Piano Quartet Op. 25; Schumann: Fantasiestücke Op. 88 Classical Music Online
The goals of Argerich, Kremer, Bashmet, and Maisky seem closer to those Schoenberg mentioned in 1937, just after he completed his famous orchestral transcription of the Piano Quartet In G minor: 'It is always played very badly, because the pianist plays louder the better he is, and you hear nothing of the strings,' Schoenberg said.
In recording the first and most popular of Brahms' three piano quartets with three of her favorite chamber-music partners, Argerich follows in the wake of some of her predecessors.

The music is fairly simple (for example, it only took me, a very poor piano player, 20 minutes to get the basics of a transcription of "The Scientist" I found on the 'net), but has a good deal of character.
Moran gave a cue on the piano to go into a more aggressive, funky groove, but by this time it was obvious that no one atmosphere would survive intact very long.
The quiet solo piano that followed clearly displayed Moran's (perhaps too heavy) attraction for sudden sforzandos and quick dissonances, all the while sustaining a sweet melody.

Elgar - His Music : Orchestral Arrangements and Transcriptions
Looking for suitable material for the orchestra to record, the company suggested to Boult that Elgar should be approached to provide a transcription of Chopin's Funeral March from his second Piano Sonata.
Although Elgar's orchestration does not fully conceal the origins of the piece as piano music, the population at large now think of it primarily in its orchestral arrangement.
From that day on, he composed no major work that was wholly original, turning instead to his old sketchbooks and, once more, to the works of the great masters for inspiration.

A Monk's Musical Musings: Analysis: Beethoven's Ninth, Prolog
The Liszt transcriptions of Beethoven's nine symphonies are a musical monument in their own right, and are no mere collection of piano reductions, but are rather scholarly works of supreme transcendency by arguably the greatest piano virtuoso/composer of all time.
If you want to follow along, the materials I'm going to use are Franz Liszt's Piano Transcription of the symphony, along with Cyprien Katsaris' recording of the transcription.
For a listening reference, I will be using Katsaris' amazing recording of the solo piano transcription, which I actually prefer to most symphonic performances due to the "issues" I have with the finale: I'm one of those old school guys that does not care to hear vocal soloists and vocal choirs in a symphony.
