  Pianoforte - LoveToKnow 1911
The group of keyed stringed musical instruments, among which the pianoforte is latest in order of time, has been invented and step by step developed with the modern art of music, which is based upon the simultaneous employment of different musical sounds.
Now the first notion of a pianoforte is a dulcimer with keys, and we may perhaps not be wrong in supposing that there had been many attempts and failures to put a keyboard to a dulcimer or hammers to a harpsichord before Cristofori successfully solved the problem.
The introduction of iron into pianoforte structure was differently and independently effected in America, the fundamental idea there being to use a single casting for the metal plate and bars, instead of forging or casting them in separate pieces.

Gottfried Silbermann - by Jan Van den Hemel
Cristofori, whose name is indissolubly associated with the first pianoforte, must have been preceded by one or more organ-builders, because we can observe that a complete immersion in practise is indispensable for creating such a complicated action.
True, the idea for the pianoforte was first concepted and executed in Italy, but Silbermann has made such an important improvement, that he can nearly be considered as the inventor himself.
He worked on his pianofortes for the rest of his life, except between 1740 and 1743, when he was working continuously on organs.

Music For Children - Pianoforte Lesson - Music Education
It has become a custom ; the pianoforte is an article of domestic furniture (and a very ugly one); pianoforte-playing is a sort of polish to a cursory education.
It is obvious that even a slight capacity to play the pianoforte is useful and delightful provided one plays with taste and understanding, for one gets from it a certain satisfaction which mere listening does not give.
It is doubtless the conventional and domes-tic character of the pianoforte that leads us to train our children to play upon it rather than upon the violin.

Piano Action: Modern Piano vs. Pianoforte   (Site not responding. Last check: )
The pianoforte was an instrument used primarily in the early- to mid-nineteenth century.
While there are major structural differences between pianofortes and today's grand pianos, the only difference I will be considering is the fact that the hammers on a pianoforte are much smaller than those of a grand piano.
The sustain time on the pianoforte is longer, but this is dependent more on the tension of and material used in the strings of the instrument than anything else.
