Cagayan is a province of the Philippines in the Cagayan Valley region in Luzon.
Cagayán province is distinct from the city in Mindanao named Cagayan de Oro, and is far away from Cagayan Islands of Palawan.
In 1581, Captain Juan Pablo Careon came to Cagayan with one hundred fully-equipped soldiers with their families by order of Gonzalo Ronquillo de Peñaloza, the fourth Spanish Governor-General of the Philippines, to explore the Cagayan Valley and to convert the natives to Christianity as well as to establish ecclesiastical missions and towns throughout the valley.

 Missing ivory image of Lady of Piat found - Aug. 11, 2003
Constancio Floria, the priest assigned in the village, the image was traced to the ancestral house of the late Cagayan Archbishop Teodulfo Domingo.
Neyra, in his lecture during the Aggao nac Cagayan celebrations in June, said the missing ivory image, which had a lighter skin tone, was a replacement for the original dark-skinned image done in papier-mache almost 400 years ago.
He said historical documents showed that the image was taken in 1604 to Piat town, Cagayan, then under the old Diocese of Nueva Segovia, to pacify the natives, who had killed Spanish settlers in the town.

The miraculous image of the Our Lady of Piat was enthroned on a boat covered with flowers, reminiscent of the time when she travelled from Macau in l604 and arrived in Baggao, then brought to Aparri, then Lallo-c, which was the seat of the Archdiocese of Nueva Segovia for a time.
But after she was transferred to Piat in an attempt to pacify the warring tribes and put them under Our Lady's protection, the people of the town refused to give her back.
Pedro Salgado, OP, who wrote the book "Cagayan Valley and the Cordilleras." After reading the book, Bobby realized that the Dominicans championed the cause of the natives at that time and they were able to propagate devotion to the Our Lady of Piat among the people.
