		French soprano Sandrine Piau is not as readily known as other Handelians, at least on this side of the pond, but she is certainly among the most gifted of interpreters as she proves on this wonderful recording of opera arias specifically written for the soprano voice.
		Her voice and singing style should appeal to both camps of opera lovers: devotees of the HIP movement and those who are afraid of HIP because of the stigma of "white, bland voices" that became a trademark of the movement.
		Yet Piau's disc risks being overlooked in the USA since the French soprano is not quite a household name here (in spite of some marvellous solo recitals in her discography).

		Piau used to sing in the Radio France children's chorus, and it was through a child's eyes she first experienced the world of opera; her first solo role was Flora in Britten's Turn of the Screw, and she's able unerringly to find the almost naïve simplicity of utterance that's needed for these early Mozart heroines.
		No matter what demands Mozart throws at his heroines, Piau is equal to the task, sometimes floating her bel canto over the soft string sound of the Freiburg Baroque Orchestra, before springing thrillingly into action in some scintillating semiquavers, virtuoso runs and trills that demand real flexibility across the full range of the voice.
		Piau's Mozart Aria disc in a magazine, got the disc the next day, and since then have been just blown away by her artistry.

		Piau seems to be a generic term for various forms of chinese missiles - I'm not even sure that piau have to be edged.
		The throwing leaf piau (lin ye piau) resembles a broad leaf with several slits -I think a Hawthorn leaf is the closest I've seen.

		On croit tout savoir du Haendel de Piau et l'on s'attend seulement à un beau moment de musique répétant un peu mécaniquement les trésors de l'enregistrement, puisque le programme lui-même s'assume comme une reprise de ces derniers.

		Piau is difficult to reach from the Spanish side, though from top runs at 2,400 metres, 300 metres below the Pic du Midi, the imposing mountain scenery is largely within a Spanish national park.
