Piccadilly Circus was created in 1819, at the junction with Regent Street, which was then being built under the planning of John Nash on the site of a house and garden belonging to a Lady Hutton.
The Piccadilly Circus tube station was opened 10 March 1906 on the Bakerloo Line, and on the Piccadilly Line in December of that year.
The station is on the Piccadilly Line between Green Park and Leicester Square, and the Bakerloo Line between Charing Cross and Oxford Circus.

Thus Finsbury Park became the terminus of the line and, despite increasing congestion of road traffic, the GNR and their successor the LNER refused consent for any extension for many years (they also did the same to the Great Northern and City Railway, described under the Northern Line).
The original layout between the tube mouths (at Barons Court) and Hammersmith had the Piccadilly tracks on the north side of the District; both this section and the tracks westwards to Acton Town were now rearranged, with the Piccadilly Line running between the District tracks.
Though the line is described as east/westbound throughout, the section from Cockfosters to Holborn was formerly known as north/southbound, and evidence of this remains in old signs and the platform numbering.

The original Piccadilly Circus station was to have been the terminus for the line from South Kensington, and was to be located at the junction of Air Street with Piccadilly (where the street Piccadilly was much narrower then than now).

When the Central Line was extended westwards after the war, a new White City station was constructed on the new line and Wood Lane was closed in November 1947.
The line was a left-over from plans to build a railway from Wood Green to the Strand but that plan was amalgamated with those of the Brompton and Piccadilly Railway to form what is part of today's Piccadilly line.
Eventually, on 30th September 1994 the line was closed because the cost of refurbishing the lifts at the station could not be justified.

Because the line was deliberately designed to interconnect with existing lines, it has an unusually large proportion of interchanges: every station but one is either served by National Rail or another Underground line.

In 1910, the line became part of the London Electric Railway, and from 1928 onwards many improvements were made to the existing stations.
Out of all the stations on the Piccadilly Line Northern Extension designed by Charles Holden in the 1930s, Manor House is unique because it doesn't have a proper station building at street level - the station concourse is buried under the crossroads where Green Lanes crosses the Seven Sisters Road.
The first section of the Victoria Line was built between Finsbury Park and Manor House, but after testing was complete and the rest of the line built, it was decided not to open a set of Victoria line platforms at Manor House.

As a crowd of passengers wait on the southbound Bakerloo Line platform, the station PA springs to life with a bing-bong.
Why is it that whenever I get the Northern Line (which thankfully is rarely) and I think it's going to Morden or Totteridge and Whetstone or wherever and it always seems to stop at Finchley or somewhere tantalisingly three or four stops from wherever I need.
One rail line returns to normal after engineering work is completed, but others remain closed.
