  History of Pickaway County
First settlements in the territory comprising the county were in 1796 or 1797, the first cabins being those of squatters built in the Pickaway Plains on the "trace," leading from the crossing of the Hockhocking (now Lancaster) by the plains to Chillicothe.
Pickaway County came into existence March 1, 1810, by act of the General Assembly of Ohio in session at Chillicothe on January 12, 1910.
The house of Henry Nevill, was appointed as the place to hold courts in the new county until the permanent location of the county seat, the village of Jefferson.

Pickaway township is also famous because of the Pickaway Plains, which make up the greater part of the township.
The surface of the township is chiefly rolling, with the exception of the portion comprising the Pickaway Plains, where it is almost perfectly level.
The first white child born in the township, and probably the first in Pickaway County, was Mary Evans, daughter of Caleb Evans and his wife Elizabeth, the date of her birth being June 8, 1798.

 Pickaway County, Ohio History
The name Pickaway (or Piqua) adopted for the county and so written in the enabling act was of Indian origin, said to have been the name of a numerous family of the Shawnee tribe who occupied the plains, known as the Pickaway Plains, when the first white people came there.
The house of Henry Nevill, named, in the act as the place of holding the courts in the new county, until the permanent location of the county seat, was in the village of Jefferson, about two miles south of Circleville, a considerable trading point at the time and Mr.
The first court in Pickaway County was a special session held at the town of Jefferson, on Friday, the 6th day of April, A. 1810, for the purpose of appointing a clerk pro tempore and a recorder and to fix a suitable number of justices of the peace for the different townships of the county.

At the period of its settlement, the greater portion of the township was covered with a heavy growth of timber, consisting of oak, ash, elm, hickory and honey locust, with many fl walnut and maple trees along the banks of the streams.
In the fall, though much discouraged with the prospect, he put 20 acres of plain land in wheat, which turned out well and convinced him that the plains were good land.
Pickaway Lodge, No. 747, I. F., is 20 years old, having been instituted in 1886.

Six of those counties (Hardin, Harrison, Muskingum, Pickaway, Putnam, and Richland) recorded their first eagle nests in modern-day Ohio.
The counties with new nests in 2004 were Sandusky (3), Erie (2), Ross (2), Wyandot (2), Ashtabula (1), Hardin (1), Harrison (1), Huron (1), Knox (1), Muskingum (1), Ottawa (1), Pickaway (1), Putnam (1), and Richland (1).
One pair of eagles built their nest in a goose-nesting tub at the Killdeer Plains Wildlife Area in Marion County - a first-of-its-kind occurrence.

 A. W. Marion State Park
The area is diverse with woodlands, plains and prairie.
Two state nature preserves operated by the ODNR Division of Natural Areas and Preserves are located near the park: Shallenberger Preserve, east of the park off State Route 22, and Stage's Pond, north of the park on Haggerty Road.
Deer Creek State Park is also located in Pickaway County and offers camping, fishing, boating and picnicking.

 A. W. Marion State Park
Due largely to the fertile soils of the Pickaway Plains, which are said to contain the richest land in Ohio, early inhabitants were attracted here.
An ancient circular earthworks on the site of what is now the city of Circleville (hence the name) gave evidence to their presence.
In 1962, the park was renamed the A.W. Marion State Park in honor of the first director of the Department of Natural Resources, a Pickaway County native.

After the war that ensued was over, Logan, then at old Chillicothe, on Pickaway Plains, refused to attend a council to which Lord Dunmore invited him.
Leaving a small garrison at Point Pleasant, the Virginians pushed across the Ohio, traversed the pathless wilderness in the midst of perils and hardships, and on the 24th of October encamped on Pickaway Plains not far from old Chillicothe, now the borough of Westfall.
Dunmore was encamped on the banks of Sippo Creek, about seven miles southwest from the present Circleville, and there he held a council with the Indian chiefs, who, acknowledging their weakness, sued for peace.

It’s easy to get confused, among so many William Halls, but deeds helped prove that it was, indeed, William Hall III who moved his second family to Pickaway County in about 1835, only three years before his death.  Finding those deeds was a remarkable story in itself.

Dedicated April 15 at Pickaway Township Elementary School to honor Mingo Chief Logan, who settled on the Pickaway Plains in 1770.
His important speech on peace, delivered after Lord Dunmore's War under a massive elm, was inscribed on the Chief Logan Monument in Circleville, Pickaway County.
A marker will honor the Shawnee war chief and his sister, who were important figures in the history of the Scioto Valley.

John, originally from England, came to Delaware with his parents where he served an apprenticeship to a tailor.
He married Elizabeth Prettyman in Lewiston, Delaware in 1808, first to the Pickaway Plains, then near Portsmouth and finally settling in Pike County in 1816 where John died in October 1821 Elizabeth remarried in Pike County.
She died in California (now Stockdale) on May 18, 1871.
