	History of Pickaway County
		First settlements in the territory comprising the county were in 1796 or 1797, the first cabins being those of squatters built in the Pickaway Plains on the "trace," leading from the crossing of the Hockhocking (now Lancaster) by the plains to Chillicothe.
		Pickaway County came into existence March 1, 1810, by act of the General Assembly of Ohio in session at Chillicothe on January 12, 1910.
		The house of Henry Nevill, was appointed as the place to hold courts in the new county until the permanent location of the county seat, the village of Jefferson.

	Pickaway County, Ohio History
		The name Pickaway (or Piqua) adopted for the county and so written in the enabling act was of Indian origin, said to have been the name of a numerous family of the Shawnee tribe who occupied the plains, known as the Pickaway Plains, when the first white people came there.

	Pickaway County, Ohio History
		At the period of its settlement, the greater portion of the township was covered with a heavy growth of timber, consisting of oak, ash, elm, hickory and honey locust, with many fl walnut and maple trees along the banks of the streams.

	A. W. Marion State Park
		The area is diverse with woodlands, plains and prairie.

	A. W. Marion State Park
		Due largely to the fertile soils of the Pickaway Plains, which are said to contain the richest land in Ohio, early inhabitants were attracted here.
		An ancient circular earthworks on the site of what is now the city of Circleville (hence the name) gave evidence to their presence.
		In 1962, the park was renamed the A.W. Marion State Park in honor of the first director of the Department of Natural Resources, a Pickaway County native.

	Henry Clay Van Metre

	First Families
		John, originally from England, came to Delaware with his parents where he served an apprenticeship to a tailor.
		He married Elizabeth Prettyman in Lewiston, Delaware in 1808, first to the Pickaway Plains, then near Portsmouth and finally settling in Pike County in 1816 where John died in October 1821 Elizabeth remarried in Pike County.
