Pickerel's fifth war patrol, from 10 July to 26 August, was a voyage from Brisbane, Australia, to Pearl Harbor for refit, with a short patrol in the Mariana Islands, en-route.
Pickerel was the only American submarine in that area at the time, but she could not both have been sunk on the 3rd and also sunk the cargo ship on the 7th.
