A lumber workers' local was active in Deer River, Minnesota, by 1910, and "Wobblies" (as IWW members were popularly called) became involved in free-speech fights in.1911 and 1912, but it was the actions of mine workers at Virginia, Minnesota, that first awakened the lumber workers of the area to the power of united action.
The Virginia and Rainy Lake Lumber Company was a concern combining the northern Minnesota interests of the Weyerhaeusers, the extensive Minnesota and Wisconsin holdings of the Edward Hines Lumber Company, and the giant Virginia mills of the Cook and O'Brien Company.
The Virginia and Rainy Lake plant was the largest white pine mill in the world as well as one of the "most modern and complete." The grounds covered perhaps fifteen square miles, and the plant produced an average of one million board feet of lumber a day on a 24-hour, seven-day-week schedule.

Picket Lake is in Ecological Lake Class 17, which consists of 99 lakes in northeast Minnesota that are small, shallow, are bowl-shaped, and have very soft (unmineralized) water.
Picket Lake is typical of lakes in this lake class except that it has a more irregular shoreline shape.
The total catch of fish (all species combined) in the gillnets in 1997 of 21.0 fish/net (22.3 lb/net) was in the normal range for this lake class and was very close to the long term average catch of 20.9 fish/net (19.6 lb/net) in all gillnet assessments on this lake.

Nels Lake is in Ecological Lake Class 10, which consists of 76 lakes in northeast Minnesota that are small and have very soft (unmineralized) water.
Lake bottom substrates along the shoreline of Nels Lake are ledgerock, boulder, and rubble, interspersed with sand or muck.
Perch numbers in 2006 (8.7/gillnet) were higher than normal (in the fourth quartile) for this lake class and were higher than the median catch of 5.2/gillnet in all investigations on this lake.
