Pickford's House, a Grade One listed building, was built in 1770 by the architect Joseph Pickford as his family home and work premises.
Other houses in Friar Gate, Derby's finest Georgian Street, were also designed by Pickford, but Number 41 is the only one which the public can enter and learn what domestic life was like in early nineteenth century Derby.
Pickford's House Museum shows the accommodation and furnishings of a late Georgian professional man. The visitor can see the ground floor rooms furnished as they might have been in Pickford's time together with displays of eighteenth and nineteenth century costume.

In the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries the Guard House was used as a lock-up for those guilty of breaching the peace or theft.
When the City Council closed Guard House Passage in 1880, they allowed the Guard House to be rebuilt by Jones and Co. as 56 and 57 Wine Street and used as a shop.

There is more than enough empty office space in Derby already, Roman House and the office complex in St Peter's Churchyard to name but two examples.
I have spent many happy hours in the museum and it is certainly worth visiting, but I only have to travel from Alvaston.
Apart from the Industrial Museum, we have Derby Museum and Art Gallery, Pickfords House, ghost walks, Pride Park, Derby Crown china and, most of all, Derby's well-known and very extensive pub and club crawl.

 Pickford's House Museum
You can see the ground floor dining room, drawing room and morning room as they might have been in Joseph Pickford's time. A Georgian bedroom and dressing room have been recreated on the first floor, while on the top floor there is a servant's bedroom complete with straw mattress.
Pickford's House is an historic building and adaptations have been made to give wheelchair users access to the ground floor and basement. Unfortunately there is no toilet on these floors and no wheelchair access to the first and second floors. Visitors may view a video guide to the museum.
If you wish to visit the museum as an organised group, just let us know beforehand when you are coming and what you want to see. This helps us to ensure that your visit does not clash with other groups.
