Notes on Picking Pin Tumbler Locks
Lock picking is a core skill of the locksmithing trade and is also of value to those evaluating, investigating, and studying security systems.
In an ideal lock, all of the pin holes in the plug would be in perfect alignment with the corresponding holes in the shell, the centerline of the plug would be exactly parallel to that of the shell, and all of the pins would be exactly the same diameter.
Note that while many locks pick predominantly back to front or front to back, there are exceptions, and you may find that the binding pin stack "jumps around" from the back to the front to the middle and so on.

The Art of Legal Lock Picking
Lock picking means to open a lock by use of a flat piece of steel called a pick.
By picking the lock, you simply replace the function of a key with a pick that raises the pins to their "breaking point," and using a tension wrench one rotates the cylinder to operate the cam at the rear of the lock's cylinder to unlock the mechanism.
The tension wrench is used to apply tension to the cylinder of the lock to cause a slight binding action on the pins as well as to turn the cylinder after the pins have been aligned by the pick; this opens the lock.
