And at Fox you always had the feeling of being confined in a very narrow playing field that was the stage for the film; spaces were small and claustrophobic, backgrounds were scarce while the camera focused on the scenes' players in more intense lighting than any other studio would use.
Richard Widmark almost immediately was at loggerheads with independent producer/director Samuel Fuller, who instead of being impressed by the cocky Fox star wiped the superior grin of the actors face by seemingly giving in immediately to his demands at a drop of a head - thus baffling Widmark to the point of insecurity.
And on "Pickup" the result is an almost flawless image that even on the 120-inch big screen with the best equipment gives you the satisfaction of watching film - not video, even letting you forget most of the times that what you see is NOT 35mm.

This 1953 classic was film noir kicked up a notch: like all movies in the genre, it was filled with shady characters, a damsel in distress, and a bleak sense of morality, but when Fuller was at the helm, the stakes became higher, the message more prevalent, and the sex appeal steamier.

DVD Verdict Review - Pickup On South Street: Criterion Collection
One of the great forgotten gems of the 1950s, Sam Fuller's Pickup on South Street is a top-shelf noir that, more than 50 years after its initial release, still plays like gangbusters.
When it was released in 1953, Pickup on South Street was lambasted (albeit unfairly) by political critics from both the left and the right.
Other films in the same vein may have the same technical competence, but lack the fascinating dynamic created by Fuller's emphasis on characters instead of types, and his steadfast adherence to the idea that it's the relationships, not the style, that form the backbone of the story.

filmcritic.com Movie Review: Pickup on South Street
It's probably blasphemy, but I'll say it anyway: Pickup on South Street is simply an unremarkable film noir.
Samuel Fuller, best known for his masterful psycho-ward thriller Shock Corridor, made Pickup because he (per his interview on the new Criterion DVD) wanted to get inside the mind of the pickpocket, show how he lives, and really show the audience what he's all about.
But Pickup on South Street ends up as too far-fetched to take seriously and too frivolous to merit much more of our attention than this.
