IPA /'i.ʎɐ du 'pi.ku/) is an island of the Azores noted for its eponymous volcano, Ponta de Pico (Pico Alto), which is the highest mountain of Portugal and also the highest elevation of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge.
The volcano is in the south-west of the island, at 38.47 N, 28.40 W. It is a basaltic stratocone 2,350 m high with steep sides.
The position of the island on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge means that deep water is very close.

After years of part-time work on this project to extract all the marriages of everyone from the island of Pico since the beginning of the records, I now have 11,000 mariages from all the villages which exist on Pico, covering the years 1593 to 1876.
While I have ancestors from every village on the island, often they were born in the southern villages in the 16th or 17th century, often before records exist for those villages today.
