This route takes you to such scenic highlights as Pico do Arieiro and Santana, and is one of the finest parts of Madeira for mountain hiking.
You will also have a view of Pico Ruivo to the northwest (Madeira's highest point, at 1,860m/6,101 ft.), which can be accessed from Pico do Arieiro by a difficult 8km (5-mile) hill walk.
Ribeiro Frio (Cold River) is a little village in the Madeira Forest Park (a protected area of trees and mountains in the center of Madeira that is spared from development) that occupies a dramatic setting in view of waterfalls, jagged peaks, and sleepy valleys.

Pico do Areeiro is the second-highest mountain on the island, yet can be reached by road, and taxi drivers take people up there for early morning sunrises.
Pico Grande is identified by its prominent summit tor, then look along the rugged crest of Madeira towards the plateau of Paúl da Serra.
A return could be made through the tunnel to return to Pico do Areeiro, but there is also a path on the eastern side of the ridge, though it involves more ascent and descent than the route through the tunnels.

Near Pico Ruivo we walk through the oldest heather forest in existence.
We soon arrive at Pico Ruivo (the highest point on the island) and the views from here are out of this world.
Leaving Funchal we drive to Pico do Arieiro from where we start the walk at Poço da Neve, an ice storage facility (shaped like a well), dug into the ground in the early part of the 19th century.

The Arieiro- Ruivo walk is walk 19 in their book and it says that the route through the tunnels is blocked by a landslide (again, it happened also a few years ago, when this route was blocked for about 3 years).
This means that the longer and more strenuous alternative route has to be taken again, over the Pico das Torres.

When we left by car towards Pico do Arieiro the weather was heavily clouded in Santo da Serra.
We passed the shoulder of Pico Moledo and this afforded an excellent view down the Ribeira Seca and the Penha de Aguia.
When we returned to the Pico do Arieiro we were unpleasantly surprised by the large amount of tourists who just came there for a quick photo of the view and left again with the coach.

From here the Pico Grande can be seen if it is not too misty (the clouds can become quite thick here limiting the view).
Carry on walking to the left and you'll eventually see the caves were the men cut into the rock for shelter when making the trails many years ago.
It will be beneficial to rest here for a while until you start out up the hill to the highest peak of Madeira, Pico Ruivo (1862M, 6109ft).

In Queimadas there is a parking place for cars and you can even reach Queimadas by walking about 20 minutes from Pico das Pedras or Rancho Madeirense.

It is one of the nicest mountain trek which I ever done.
After cca 5 hour "heavy" walk / climb (from 1007m to 1800m) finaly Pico Ruivo appeared in the front of us.
Initialy we planned to spent a night in refugio Ruivo to continue to Pico Arieiro but local refugio curator refused to give us accomodation.
