Thus a picosecond and shorter pulse duration turns out to be a prerequisite for the successful use of lasers in advanced scientific applications.
To define the trailing edge of the pulse thereby shortening it to a few picoseconds, the complement to reflection switching, transmission switching, is used for a second stage.
The gas medium of the CO laser is free from this limitation; thus a picosecond laser pulse may be amplified directly.

The word picosecond is formed by the prefix pico and the unit second.
In contrast to most picosecond laser flash photolysis systems, the pump and the probe beams are at right angles to each other with sample solution contained in a 1 cm cuvette.
The methodology of picosecond laser flash photolysis is useful in characterizing singlet and triplet excited states, excited state energy transfer, inter- and intramolecular electron transfer reactions, charge transfer complexation and radical recombination in aqueous and nonaqueous solvents as well as in heterogeneous systems such as colloidal suspensions and thin films.

Laser pulses with a width of 100fs are focused on the switch to generate picosecond voltage pulses.
Picosecond voltage pulses are generated in microstructures which are lithographically produced from semiconductor thin films.
As a first application, the picosecond voltage pulses will be used to calibrate the time response of 50GHz sampling oscilloscopes which become increasingly important for the characterisation of today´s high-speed electronic circuits.

 Picosecond Lasers
Calmar’s picosecond fiber lasers at 780 nm wavelength band provide researchers a powerful tool to explore the areas where 1550nm pulsed lasers do not cover.
Low timing jitter and low amplitude noise are characteristics of Calmar’s picosecond fiber lasers, and ensure that the quality of the laser output meets even the most stringent test requirements.
Calmar’s picosecond fiber lasers also provide users with the flexibility to vary the pulse repetition rate over a wide range, and to tune the wavelength from 765 ~ 780 nm region.

Picosecond dynamics of G-protein coupled receptor activation in rhodopsin from time-resolved UV resonance Raman spectroscopy.
The protein response to retinal chromophore isomerization in the visual pigment rhodopsin is studied using picosecond time-resolved UV resonance Raman spectroscopy.
These UV Raman spectral changes are nearly identical to those observed for the rhodopsin-to-Meta I transition, implying that impulsively driven protein motion by the isomerizing chromophore during the 200 fs primary transition drives key structural changes that lead to protein activation.

Picosecond Lasers for Single-Event Effects Testing
The interaction of a picosecond laser pulse with a semiconductor material can generate a high density of electron-hole pairs (also known as charge carriers), much like the passage of an ionizing particle through the device.
Although the initial charge profile produced by absorption of a laser pulse is somewhat different from that produced by the interaction of a cosmic ray, both events produce a highly localized trail of charge capable of generating single-event effects in microelectronic devices.
Aerospace first reported the use of a picosecond laser as a diagnostic tool for understanding the origins of single-event transients in analog devices in 1993.

Ultrafast spectroscopy is an interdisciplinary area of research that spans various disciplines in chemistry and provides essential information on the mechanistic and kinetic details of chemical events that occur in the timescale of 10 femtoseconds to 100 picoseconds.
The chemical events in these experiments are initiated by an ultrafast laser pulse (pump) and the photophysical and photochemical events are probed by another ultrafast laser probe pulse.
The output of the probe pulse is fed to a spectrograph (HR-320, ISDA Instruments, Inc.) via fiber-optic cables and is analyzed with a dual diode array detector (Princeton Instruments, Inc.) interfaced with a computer.
