NOVEL - LoveToKnow Article on NOVEL   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-20)
But the novel adapts itself to so large a range of readers, and covers so vast a ground in the imitation of life, that it is the unique branch of literature which may be cultivated without any real distinction or skill, and yet for the moment may exercise a powerful purpose.
It was not, however, until about 1830 that the novel began to be one of the main channels of imaginative writing in France, and the development of this kind of fiction was one of the main features of the romantic revival.
The novel called The Twice-Flowering Plum-Trees, belonging to the 16th (or I7th) century, is a typical example of the moral Chinese novel, written with a virtuous purpose.

Thus, the modern novel is rooted in two traditions, the mimetic and the fantastic, or the realistic and the romantic.
The novel became the dominant form of Western literature in the 19th cent., which produced many works that are considered milestones in the development of the form.
These novels are not only masterpieces of realism but also—in their carefully crafted form, experimental point of view, and superb style—supreme examples of the novel as a literary genre.

Picture Bride - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The term Picture Bride refers to the practice in the early 20th Century of immigrant workers (chiefly Japanese and Korean) in Hawaii and the West Coast of the United States selecting brides from their native countries via a matchmaker, who paired bride and groom using only photographs and family recommendations of the possible candidates.
Thus, the picture bride phenomenon's relationship to the early years of Korean immigration may be said to end at roughly this time.
In 1993, a novel titled Picture Bride was written by Yoshiko Uchida, and tells the story of a fictional Japanese woman named Hana Omiya, a picture bride sent to live with her new husband in San Francisco in 1917.

Notes on the beginning of the English novel
Novels differ from earlier narrative fiction in a certain freedom from stereotypes in plot, character, and names.
The people who exist and the things that transpire in novels are recognizable as behaving and occurring in believable human ways -- things happen in the fictional world according to laws that are essentially like those governing the everyday world.
Readers of novels "identify" or "empathize" with the heroes and heroines of novels, suggesting a greater closeness between readers and novel characters than between readers and characters in other fictional forms.

This World War I novel is a German author's attempt to tell - through the persona of a young, "unknown soldier" - of a generation of men who, even though they may have escaped its shells, were betrayed and destroyed by the war.
The poor, suffering, unknown soldier was subjected to this nightmare to further the imperial ambitions of the rulers of their respective countries, and regrettably it must be said, to satisfy the periodic national surges of hatred and xenophobia which fester across generations.
The novel is apocalyptic and perhaps should be compulsory reading for all school children in their literary curriculum.

NOVEL [novel] in modern literary usage, a sustained work of prose fiction a volume or more in length.
The term novel is derived from novella, Italian for a compact, realistic, often ribald prose tale popular in the Renaissance and best exemplified by the stories in Giovanni Boccaccio's Decameron (1348-53).
The historical novel embraces not only the event-filled romances of Scott, Cooper, and Kenneth Roberts, but also works that strive to convey the essence of life in a certain time and place, such as Sigrid Undset's Kristin Lavransdatter (1920-22), about life in medieval Norway, and Mary Renault's Mask of Apollo (1966), set in ancient Greece.

HELLER, Term Papers 2000, Term papers, 051128
The author describes "Picture This" as a work of fiction about Rembrandt's painting "Aristotle Contemplating the Bust of Homer", which was sold to the Metropolitan Museum of Art in 1961.
It analyzes how the novel's cyclical time also allows for the recurrence and repetition of phrases and images and how the image of Snowden lying in the back of Yossarian's plane is continually alluded to and revisited throughout the book.
It demonstrates that both novel and film highlight the sheer idiocy and futility of combat warfare, and concludes that this is now the contemporary American view of World War II and war generally.

Liebermann’s affinity for Oscar Wilde’s decadent novel blossomed early in life and betrayed the searching inner life of a teenager outside the mainstream and a deep, artistic soul.
Also, she taught with the John W. Schaum piano course, so there were these horrible little pieces with pictures of fire trucks and what-not and it was all very condescending and not very enjoyable.

Imaginative but wordy 'Picture' brings novel to stage
Wilde's famous novel is about the lordling who is captured on canvas in the flush of innocent beauty, only to discover that the sins of his subsequent life leave no mark on his real face, while the portrait, hidden away in his attic, records every depth of his growing depravity.
And then there's Dorian's picture, which graduates imaginatively from positive opacity to negative transparency to a monstrous three-dimensional garbage dump to a stunning final reassertion of the picture itself.
In the novel, Wilde often creates by negatives -- Dorian is the experiential antithesis to Lord Henry's constant stream of wit.
