Picture Transfer Protocol - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Picture Transfer Protocol (PTP) is a widely-supported protocol developed by the International Imaging Industry Association to allow the transfer of images from digital cameras to computers and other peripheral devices without the need of additional device drivers.
The PTP protocol specify a way of creating, transfering and manipulating objects which are typically photographic images such as a JPEG file.
PTP on Linux and other free software/open source operating systems is supported by a number of libraries, such as libgphoto and libptp, libraries used by applications such as digikam and f-spot.

Nikon's press release hints that this would be useful for transferring images over a wireless LAN, their current WT-1 only supports FTP protocol which can be a little complicated to set up.
The WT-1, however, uses FTP (File Transfer Protocol) as its transmission protocol, and thus requires the user to configure settings on the camera and the PC to be able to transfer data.

Picture Transfer Protocol PTP Driver/Still Image Capture Class Driver
Picture Transfer Protocol (PIMA 15740:2000, ISO 15740) is developed by I3A (International Imaging Industry Association) as a standard for exchanging images with and between digital still photography devices.
PTP protocol is independent from the transport medium, it can be implemented on any communication protocol including IRDA, USB, 1394.
PTP protocol driver implements the commands and the communication flow at PTP level.

Picture Transfer Protocol gets ISO 15740 | Digital Camera Review
The interoperability resulting from the widespread adoption of PTP greatly reduces consumers' frustration at the difficulty of transferring photos from camera to computer, printer, or kiosk, and it will significantly contribute to the ongoing growth in sales of digital cameras and associated devices.
PTP was developed within the I3A IT10 Electronic Still Picture Imaging Committee by a group of companies that included Eastman Kodak Company, HP, FotoNation and Microsoft Corporation.
To ensure that the ISO PTP standard is swiftly implemented by device manufacturers and software developers, I3A is planning to create resources for the development community, which could include support documents, technical white papers, tools and conformance guidelines, and a directory of PTP-compliant products.

The Media Transfer Protocol is a set of custom extensions to the Picture Transfer Protocol (PTP) devised by Microsoft, to allow the protocol to be used for devices other than digital cameras, for example digital audio players such as MP3 players, and other portable media devices, for example portable video players.
The main purpose of the protocol is to transfer media files and associated metadata to/from devices, with optional additional support for remote control of the device, reading and setting of device parameters such as special DRM-related device parameters for protected content.
The protocol itself does not implement synchronization, but with it synchronization of a device to a host computer using mechanisms similar to SyncML and Apple's iSync can be implemented.
