Picuris and Taos have followed pottery traditions quite different from those of the other pueblos.
At Taos and Picuris the clay is formed of decayed pre-Cambrian schist, filled with abundant flecks of mica throughout, while the Tewa achieved the same metallic luster by coating their clay with a thick, glittery finish.
Picuris pots are characterized by their mottled appearance, which varies from glittery orange metallic to almost fl, while Taos pots are often more uniform in color.

When the excavation of the pueblo was finished, the people of Picuris Pueblo, about 400 of whom still live in modern dwellings on the site, covered up the dig so that few traces of the original pueblo are visible.
Also significant was the discovery of 12 unburned prehistoric kivas at Picuris, an interesting pattern given the propensity of ancestral Pueblo peoples to burn or "decommission" these important ritual structures when they abandon their settlements.

May 19, 2005 — By Adam Rankin, Albuquerque Journal, N.M. — Picuris Pueblo is hoping to restore a 200-acre patch of aboriginal land -- valued for its special mica-rich clay used to make the pueblo's distinctive pottery -- that is now back under the pueblo's control.
The statement from the law firm representing the pueblo explained that the total acquisition is 537 acres, which includes the mine property and another 342 acres of unpatented mining claims, located about 3 miles east of the pueblo.
The specific terms of the transaction were not released, but they include the dismissal of all Picuris claims against Oglebay Norton.

Because the ski area is seeking to expand its facilities for both winter and summer use the protestants feel that the water diversion as proposed will have negative impacts on the downstream acequias, wells, and riparian areas.

On November 14 Picuris Pueblo, in an effort to publicize its concerns about the mica mining and milling operations of Ogelbay Norton, led its second public protest (see La Jicarita December 2001 for details about the first protest) at the mine site on U.S. Hill and at the mill site in Velarde.
First, we all owe an enormous debt of gratitude to Picuris Pueblo for having the courage and perseverance to take on the "big issues" such as the mica mine.
This is not the first time Picuris has led the fight to check inappropriate development in the Jicarita watershed.
