PICUS, in Roman mythology, originally the woodpecker, the favourite bird and symbol of Mars as the god of both nature and war.
Picus rejected her advances, and the goddess in her anger changed him into a woodpecker, which pecks impotently at the branches of trees, but still retains prophetic powers.

Technique for surveying hazardous trees for decay using the Picus Sonic Tomograph technology.
With Picus Sonic Tomograhy is a now technically possible to look into the centre of trees to see its condition without taking borings or resorting to cutting down healthy trees purely as a precaution.
Using a recently developed machine called The Picus Sonic Tomograph it is possible to look internally into a branch or tree trunk and display a computer generated image of its condition.
Sadly, healthy trees have been felled unnecessarily in the past as a precautionary measure. This equipment can be used on individual branches and at various hights on a tree, allowing decayed part of a tree to be removed rather than felling a whole tree.

Results show that, on average, Picus shows less decay in the samples than is found by visual inspection, although the amount by which the two figures differ, in most cases, is small.
