The Azores Microplate is bordered to the west by the M.A.R, to the south by the East Azores Fracture Zone – GLORIA Fault and the Terceira Rift to the north.
However, Pico island is occasionally hit by stronger earthquakes, with intensity from VI to VII, that have origin in nearby seismic zones such as the 1757 earthquake of San Jorge and the 1926 and 1998 earthquakes of Faial.
It is, however, possible that small magma pockets do exist at higher levels in the crust where fractional crystallization may have produced some of the rarely observed evolved lava compositions.

Uma análise comparativa dos diferentes parâmetros físicos calculados permitiu mostrar que a produtividade vulcânica na região do estratovulcão da Montanha, é em geral ligeiramente maior do que a verificada na metade oriental da ilha, embora os valores obtidos, e acima indicados, se apresentem da mesma ordem de grandeza.
Uma análise estatística da distribuição temporal das idades absolutas fornecidas pelo método do radiocarbono, bem como da data das erupções históricas que ocorreram na ilha do Pico, permitiu obter um período de retorno de cerca de 130 anos para as erupções vulcânicas na ilha do Pico, independentemente da localização do respectivo centro emissor.
A “região dos Picos”, na ilha de São Miguel, a zona central da ilha Terceira e a plataforma NW da ilha Graciosa, constituem, neste domínio, as potenciais áreas-alvo para o desenvolvimento de estudos desta natureza.

A book by Anthony Terra Valim was published a while back about one branch of Valim coming from Ribeirinha, Pico, including a branch using the double name PEREIRA VALIM from Ribeirinha which had moved to Calheta, S.Jorge.
Aside from my general interest in Pico families, I descend from a couple branches of the Valim family: one from Santo Amaro and another from Piedade named Gonçalves Valim, the 2nd most numerous Valim family using a double surname combo.
A modern day distribution of the surname in all of Portugal can be found by doing a search for all with a phone.
