		Piedmont is surrounded on three sides by the Alps mountain range, including the Monviso[?], where the Po river rises.
		From 1046 the main territory of the house of Savoy, (dukes of Savoy from 1416 and kings of Sardinia from 1720), Piedmont was the springboard for Italy's unification in 1859-1861, following earlier unsuccessful wars against Austria in 1820-1821 and 1848-1849.

		As this school was in the extreme northeastern section of the State and was geographically a part of Maryland and Virginia, however, the Negroes of the central and southern portions of West Virginia soon began the movement for the establishment of a Negro school providing for normal instruction nearer home.

	Mountain Subdivision - The Eastern Approach
		Between Cumberland, Maryland, and Piedmont, West Virginia, the Mountain Subdivision has an easy eastern approach to the Alleghenies with practically no grades of any consequence as it follows the North Branch of the Potomac River Valley, a major change from the western sixty miles of mountains between Piedmont and Newburg.
		East of Piedmont the Mountain Subdivision follows the Potomac River on its southern bank for three miles to the interlocking at West Keyser, West Virginia.
		The old eastern end of the West End was located at Williams Street in downtown Cumberland until the boundary was moved a half mile west to Viaduct Junction in the early 1990s.
