The Carolinian is a 704-mile (1133 km) daily passenger train operated by Amtrak between Charlotte, North Carolina and New York City.
The Piedmont provides an additional trip over the 173-mile (278 km) section of the line between Charlotte and Raleigh, North Carolina.
The Carolinian and Piedmont are financed jointly by Amtrak and the North Carolina Department of Transportation.

Before Amtrak came into existence, a train called the Southern Crescent was operated by the Southern Railway, a predecessor of Norfolk Southern, between Washington, DC's Union Station and New Orleans.
Amtrak's predecessor in the northeast, Penn Central, carried the Southern Crescent between New York and Washington.

Piedmont is the region of the eastern United States of America which lies between the coastal plain, from which it is divided by the fall line, and the eastern mountain ranges, the Appalachian Mountains.
The width of the Piedmont varies, being quite narrow or vanishing above the Delaware River, but nearly 300 miles wide in the State of North Carolina.
The surface relief of the Piedmont is characterized by relatively low, rolling hills with heights between 200 and 800-1000 feet above sea level.

Amtrak has decided that grouping passengers with common destinations and putting as many passengers as possible in each coach is the most efficient way to "load" a train.
Amtrak's next contract with Norfolk Southern and the state's next contract with Amtrak should provide for the forfeiture of incentive payment for any trip in which a passenger train is put in a siding for a freight train between Greensboro and Cary.
Amtrak should stock the car at New York, Washington (north and southbound) and Charlotte with food supplies in amounts commensurate with the expected passenger volume.

Amtrak plans to restore all east-west services between Chicago and New York City and Washington by Sunday, but is unable to operate its routes via Richmond, Va., to the southeast and Florida due to the lack of commercial electric power.
Amtrak service on the route used by the Crescent (trains 19 and 20) between New York-Washington and New Orleans, via Atlanta, uses a different route and was restored on Saturday, as was service within the Carolinas on the Carolinian (trains 79 and 80).
Amtrak restored all services in the Northeast Corridor on Friday and the regular schedule of trains is being operated between Washington and Boston, via New York.

Amtrak claims this is unrelated to its plans to discontinue the Boston section of the Lake Shore Limited on November 10.
Amtrak system capital is $223 million, much closer to the Senate than to the House figure, but still down from $235 million in 1996 and still below Amtrak's annual depreciation level of about $250 million.
Amtrak says that level likely will allow the Boston electrification project to continue through the year, but warns that if that is the pattern for the future, there will be delays.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — Standing in front of Amtrak's Piedmont passenger train, U.S. Transportation Secretary Norman Mineta used Charlotte's rail station as a backdrop Tuesday to lobby for the administration's plan to turn over development of the nation's passenger rail system to the states.
Under the president's plan, Amtrak would only operate the trains; station ownership and planning for future rail projects would shift to state or regional transportation agencies, Mineta said.
Mineta replied that Amtrak is an inefficient agency that has drained billions of dollars from the federal budget since it was created in 1970.

The whole Amtrak story is confusing to me, and is even more confusing when you throw in the story by the Bush Administration (which isn't surprising).
First: check out Amtrak's Weekly Specials - the Carolinian is listed as "up to 70% off." It may be 70% off for certain city pairs, but for travel within NC it seems to be running at about a 50% discount.
This is a bit of a special case, though, because the tracks are owned by Amtrak and the project was funded jointly by Amtrak, the FRA, and the state of Michigan.
