The Piedmont Triad, Triad, or North Carolina Triad is a region of North Carolina in the Piedmont that consists of the area within and surrounding the cities of Greensboro, Winston-Salem, and High Point.
Long known as one of the primary manufacturing and transportation hubs of southeastern United States, the Triad is also an important educational and cultural region and occupies a prominent place in the history of the American Civil Rights Movement.
Many western Piedmont Triad counties and municipalities belong to the Northwest Piedmont Council of Governments while many in the east belong to the Piedmont Triad Council of Governments.

 NC Mountain Land » Triad nears decision on cross-state trail route
Triad planners are nearing a decision on the route that North Carolina’s cross-state Mountains to Sea Trail will take through their area.
n the Triad, the trail already includes a portion of the Greensboro city trails along Lake Townsend, but the section is miles from other approved parts of the long trail.
In February, the Piedmont Triad Council of Governments and state officials held a planning conference so interested parties in the eastern half of the region could work on a plan to link short trails.

 Triad to present ozone 'solution' to EPA - The Business Journal of the Greater Triad Area:
In one of the largest examples of Triad cooperation, a group of more than 30 local governments and regional organizations is ready to present the Environmental Protection Agency with a series of strategies aimed at lowering ozone levels in the region.
The Triad is attempting to form what is referred to as an Early Action Compact with the EPA, a contract of sorts that would give the region another three years to bring ozone levels in line with EPA's eight-hour ozone standard, which is scheduled to go into effect on April 15.
The Triad is one of several regions in North Carolina hoping to form agreements with the EPA, said Ginger Booker, assistant director of the Piedmont Triad Council of Governments in Greensboro, who has taken the lead on the project in the Triad.

The EAC resolutions for the Triad Area were reviewed and signed by Bill Ross, NCDENR Secretary, on December 23, 2002 and by Jimmy Palmer, Regional Administrator for U.S. EPA Region 4, on December 30, 2002.

The Piedmont Triad Council of Governments (PTCOG) is a voluntary association of municipal and county governments, enabled by state law to promote regional issues and cooperation among members.

The Southern Environmental Law Center's report on the Triad's air quality as reported in today's News and Record is worth your time to read.
While I wish the Triad Early Action Compact and PART had been given more credit for our efforts to improve the air quality in this area, I cannot dispute any of the findings or recommendations in the report.
We desperately need more regional efforts and perspectives in the Triad to move away from all the historic local competition between the various Triad cities and counties.

 More Than $1 Million in EPA Grants to Help Revitalize Communities in North Carolina | Newsroom | US EPA
(ATLANTA – May 12, 2006) The cities of Durham, Forest City, Navassa, Pembroke and Sparta, the Piedmont Triad Council of Governments, and the Land-of-Sky Regional Council in North Carolina have been named as successful applicants of U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Brownfields grants that promote the redevelopment of abandoned and contaminated or potentially contaminated waste sites.
The Piedmont Triad Council of Governments in Central North Carolina will receive $200,000 in assessment grant funds to conduct community involvement activities, inventory and prioritize sites and perform environmental assessments at sites in Lexington, Eden and Reidsville.
The Land-of-Sky Regional Council in Western North Carolina will receive $400,000 in assessment grant funds for identifying, characterizing and prioritizing properties and performing environmental assessments for hazardous substances and petroleum brownfields sites in four counties: Buncombe, Henderson, Madison and Transylvania.
