Pier 1 said its second-quarter profit fell to $10.4 million, or 12 cents a share, from $18.4 million, or 20 cents a share, in the same quarter a year earlier.
Pier 1 expects third-quarter sales at stores open at least a year, also known as same-store sales, to come in flat to down 4 percent from a year ago.
Pier 1 projects the period's sales to climb 3 to 9 percent, suggesting a range of $571.9 million to $605.2 million based on the $555.3 million generated a year ago.

For the current quarter, Pier 1 now expects to earn 43 cents to 52 cents a share, down from its old estimate of 52 cents to 63 cents a share, on same-store sales that are down on a percentage basis in the mid-single digits.
Pier 1's fourth-quarter forecast means the company now expects earnings of 90 cents to 99 cents a share in the year ending in February 2005.
Wall Street expects Pier 1 to earn 98 cents a share in that fiscal year, $1.16 a share in the year after that, and $1.50 in the year ending February 2007.

Pier 1's stock price has consistently stayed around $18 since August of this year, helped by an aggressive buyback of 2.4 million shares at an average price of $17.93 and Berkshire Hathaway's (NYSE: BRKa) purchase of 8 million shares.
Not surprisingly, Pier 1 is the cheapest of the lot, trading at 19.5 times estimated fiscal year 2005 earnings of $1.00 per share.
