Pier 39 celebrated its 25th anniversary with much fanfare Saturday, including appearances by street performers of the past, as well as a fireworks display.
Pier 39 finally opened on Oct. 4, 1978, with hearty congratulations from San Francisco Mayor George Moscone, a big supporter of the waterfront development.
Erickson, who has operated the Crystal Shop on Pier 39 for 22 years, said she is happy to be where she is, tending to tourists who drop by her store with the good moods that come with being on vacation.

A couple of years ago sea lions started hauling out on the low marina docks near Pier 39 to the chagrin of sailboat owners and the delight of tourists (and by extension merchants.) An area of the docks has now been given over to the sea lions and they are pretty fun to watch.
Pier 39 itself is now an amalgam of tourist shops covering a structure that projects far into the bay.
