		Paolo Pecchioli was a good Ferrando, and subsidiary roles were generally well cast.
		The junction of old and new music was not completely unproblematic; furthermore moving the action back to the age of the Crusades had perhaps the advantage of escaping censors, but also had the effect of setting typically 19th century middle-class events in a completely unnatural historical background.
		The production by Pier Luigi Pizzi returned the events to the 19th century, with the advantage that everything regained some naturalness, but apart from that the director did not seem to have many ideas, and the performance remained very static.

		More amusing was the Rendine, a farce whose point of departure is that Mozart did not die in 1791 but fled from his creditors to Italy, where he ghost-wrote Rossini's operas.
		Elizabeth Connell, in tremendous form, sang with intense passion as the odious Odabella; Michael Sylvester, though he sometimes found the equally unpleasant Foresto heavy going for his lyric tenor, phrased warmly; baritone Paolo Coni as Ezio lacked the aggression needed for the treacherous Roman general, but he too shaped his vocal line with dexterity.

		Mattatore della serata è stato l'imponente Don Quichotte del bravo Prestia, che ha saputo mettere le sue ottime qualità vocali al servizio di una figura che con la propria nobiltà d'animo vince l'ostilità dei banditi, si mostra più generoso dei corteggiatori rivali e mette in difficoltà l'animo ribelle dell'amata Dulcinée.
		Nel ruolo di quest'ultima l'eccellente Laura Polverelli, mentre Alessandro Corbelli ha interpretato un brillante Sancho, servitore disincantato ma devoto.
		Pubblico plaudente ma non particolarmente coinvolto da un titolo che forse meritava maggiore convinzione proprio in un'apporto orchestrale che, con la direzione di Dwight Bennett, è risultato corretto e tuttavia privo di quei slanci che la musica di Massenet richiedeva per entusiasmare, con le sue melodie semplici ma incisive e l'affascinante gioco timbrico.

		In truth, Italian audiences have acquired something of a taste for such formality over the past twenty years, thanks to the inventive (and expensive) elegance of director-designer Pier Luigi Pizzi, who was the inspiring muse of Massimo Gasparon's Martina Franca production, featuring the familiar neoclassical symmetries and lavish costumes.
		But the juxtaposition of the two endings created a strong effect, thanks to the sustained momentum of Paolo Arrivabeni's intense conducting and Francesco Esposito's telling direction (complemented by Italo Grassi's highly functional set), and the whole work appeared much more emotionally concentrated than usual, with Patrizia Ciofi proving an unforgettable Desdemona.
		In Macerata, director Giancarlo Corbelli and designer Maurizio Balò took full advantage of this -- indeed, overdid things, sating the audience too soon with flaunted nudity and gore, rendered all the cruder by the decision to set the opera in a sort of butcher's shop, amid carcasses and hunks of meat.
