Mansell said that the secret of his race was setting the car up for the final quartet of fourth gear corners but that he was at a disadvantage on the straight and in the opening corners.
On lap eight, Martini ran wide and lost a place to Cheever and a lap later, Cheever eased into second ahead of Danner at turn one, while de Cesaris got by Martini.
Of the first six, Martini set fastest lap of the race, and the other five were within 0.341s, perhaps reflecting how much Mansell was able to control the race.

Martini said that he did not think the conditions of the track were to blame for the accident but, in his opinion, Senna went out because of a combination of factors or for a car problem.
Martini and Senna had complained about the condition of the track 15 days before the race and the track official had smoothed the ground.
Martini also said that at time of the Pacific GP Senna had told him that he was not happy with his car, as it was too small and "nervous".

 Minardi
In 19 years of Formula One, the team has scored all of 30 championship points (under the modern points system this number would almost quadruple), over half of them by the team's first driver, Pierluigi Martini[?].
Martini also has the team's only front row start and actually led a lap during a race in 1989.
The team, near collapse, was purchased by Australian-born businessman Paul Stoddart in early 2001, who managed to keep the team together through the season.

Martini was runner-up in the team's debut year and won the title outright in 1973.
Martini is better-known as a Formula 2 driver and 1976 was to prove to be his best season in that class: he finished equal seventh in the European Championship although he was well behind champion Jean-Pierre Jabouille.
Giancarlo's career was later overshadowed by that of his nephew, Pierluigi Martini, who had the resilience to drive for Minardi for several years, scoring their first ever Championship point and, for one glorious lap during the 1989 Portuguese GP, actually leading a race in a Minardi (no, that's not a fantasy - it really happened!).

Moments later, the battle between Andrea de Cesaris and Pierluigi Martini came to a head and de Cesaris ended up beached in the gravel at the first corner.
At the restart, Martini put Cheever under pressure, but it was Eric van de Poele (who had started 11th and put in some stellar passing manoeuvres to work his way up to fifth), who secured the last place on the podium, surprising them both with a lunge around the outside going into turn 4.
Cheever finished fourth ahead of Warwick, with Martini (who had passed the minimum age limit of 45 the weekend before) a creditable sixth on his debut.

Little Martini had the resilience to shrug off a disastrous debut year in Grand Prix racing and sensibly return to shallower waters until he was truly ready to plunge back into the deep end.
Sadly for Martini, the partnership was hardly a distinguished one, and at the end of the year he moved to Scuderia Italia along with the V12 engines.
So it was to prove, Pierluigi running for the most part in midfield anonymity until the middle of the 1995 season when his drive was taken by the then up-and-coming Portuguese driver Pedro Lamy.

Pierluigi's uncle was Giancarlo Martini, whose greatest claim to F1 fame was that he managed to crash a borrowed F1 Ferrari 312T on the warming up lap for the 1976 Race of Champions!
He was then invited back into the Faenza team in time to score the marque's first Championship point with a sixth place at Detroit in 1988.
Since then, Pierluigi has been a consistent and remarkably underrated performer for Minardi, but left at the end of 1991 to join JJ Lehto in the Dallara-Ferrari squad.
