With the death aged 78 of baritone Piero Cappuccilli, the opera world has lost one of the leading singers of his generation, known in his native Italy as the ‘prince of baritones’.
Cappuccilli was famous from the early 1960s to the early 1990s and his wide range and rich tone made him a first choice when it came to casting the major Verdi baritone roles in Simon Boccanegra, Rigoletto and Macbeth.
The recording world soon beckoned and in 1959 Cappuccilli sang Masetto in Don Giovanni under Carlo Maria Giulini for EMI; he went on to sing Lord Henry Ashton on the second Callas recording of Lucia di Lammermoor for the same company.

The same can be said of Cappuccilli’s Rodrigo, a role which often brings out the worst in baritones.
For example, he is allowed to hold his cry "A me ii ferro" in the auto-da-fe scene interminably, and Karajan indulges him by dragging the tempo for "Per me giunt," in the prison scene, a scene that is lachrymose and sentimental the way most baritones sing it.
(Not, however, Fischer-Dieskau who, in the Solti set brings real dramatic distinction to his portrayal of the ill-fated Marquis of Posa.) But Cappuccilli’s voice is smooth and beautiful and he is well-versed in the role.
