ART: PEIRRE ALECHINSKY AT THE GUGGENHEIM - New York Times
Alechinsky, born in Belgium in 1927, started his career in the late 40's as the youngest member of the short-lived Cobra, that group of Danish, Dutch and Belgian artists who practiced a gestural abstraction grounded in Surrealist automatism and European expressionism.
Alechinsky in 1965 of surrounding a central image, usually painted in acrylic, with a wide border, usually drawn in ink and ink wash, which is compartmentalized into a series of little cartoon-like scenes.
Alechinsky's way with paint, rather than ink, seems to hold more promise for development, and since that is rarely forthcoming, one begins to think of him as a talented graphic artist, as a painter manque and, generally, as an artist who has repeatedly settled for too little too soon.

Pierre Alechinsky studied from 1944 to 1948 at the Ecole Nationale Supérieure d'Architecture et des Arts Decoratifs in Brussels, concentrating on book illustration, typography and various printmaking techniques.
Along with Dotremont, Alechinsky was the linchpin of the Belgian branch of CoBrA; the last joint CoBrA exhibition in Liège was organised by him.
Alechinsky threw himself with such enthusiasm into the task of organising the movement and editing its newsletter that he hardly had time for his own work, and for this reason he did not really begin to develop as an artist until after the CoBrA period.

 Pierre Alechinsky Exhibition
Pierre Alechinsky stands among artist-engravers of this turn of the century whose work in the field of print continues to grow and prosper: to his credit, some two thousand plates.
Born in Brussels in 1927, Parisian since 1951 (after the disbanding of the COBRA group, of which he was part), Alechinsky has over fifty years of graphic work behind him, years where writing and drawing coincide, - as notes in the margin and central scene, humour and poetry, verbal imagination and plastic reality.
This elegant gesture permits the public, through the present retrospective, to savour in fl and white (and the occasional jolt of red) the fruit of more than half a century of incessant creation (rmm).

For Alechinsky, a founding member of COBRA (an acronym for the cities that contributed members to the group, Copenhagen, Brussels, and Amsterdam), the Year of the Snake can be an auspicious one.
We are featuring lots of Alechinsky's favorite images: Central Park, snakes, volcanoes, gardens, dog-kings, smiling crocodiles and sea monsters, and people existing as best they can in a world that often seems to invite extreme emotional responses.
Executed to commemorate Alechinsky's receipt of the Mellon Prize in 1977 (the "Year of the Snake" in the Chinese calendar), this accompanied the deluxe edition of Alechinsky's Painting's and Writings published to accompany his exhibition at the Carnegie Institue.

 ART OF THE 70'S: Alechinsky
The Alechinskys live primarily in Bougival, not far from Paris, and treat their handsome apartment on the East River in Manhattan as a perch that they can go to, or not, as the fancy takes them.
It is relevant to the reflective quality of this, and most of Alechinsky's other works, that he does not work standing up in front of an easel in the fencer's posture that we associate with the traditional painter in oils.
Alechinsky's light, energetic use of line and color and the more recent American phenomena of pattern and decoration and graffiti art, which would also seem to share his interests in non-Western art sources and popular culture alike.
