La Folia -- The Art of French Song -- Three Collections
Pierre Bernac (1899-1979) was the most important exponent of the French mélodie of his generation.
Bernac was entranced by the conjunction of music and poetry in the French tradition, and his singing was in a sense merely an extension of human speech, placing extraordinary emphasis on perfect diction.
Bernac’s belief in the need for performers to introduce the works of contemporary composers resulted in many engagements in which he presented the premières of some of the finest French songs then being written.

RECORDINGS; A Wellspring From Poulenc's Song Legacy - New York Times
Bernac had a high, nasal baritone voice that inclined somewhat to the inflective qualities of the comic tenor, but his feeling for atmosphere and language were special, and his intellectual sympathies put him at the service of music that was undervalued by the best French singers of his generation and before.
Bernac's particular qualities are ideal in the latter's popular ''Trois melodies'' of 1916, with their quick takes of drollery, bemusement, mystery and camp.
These have to be sifted; Bernac was no marvel of vocal preservation, and by 1957 his Gounod songs for the BBC (published for the first time on No. PB1) are hard work for singer and listeners alike.

Bernac wrote that in Poulenc's music "there is no disunity between the two conceptions which the interpreter has to express: that of the poet and that of the musician."
Bernac kept asking for more pedal and finally insisted that she put her foot down for four measures and hold it there.
Bernac was a baryton-martin, a particular French category of voice-Debussy's Pelléas, for example-a light baritone that reaches easily up to A-flat or A, and down to low A-flat, with a full volume range at both ends of the voice.

Pierre Bernac's wonderfully manic, sometimes suave, sometimes loopy, always brilliant singing of Le Bal masqué demonstrates exactly why Poulenc preferred him above all as his ideal interpreter.
Not all brass players will warm to the very "French" timbre of Lucien Thévet's solo horn in the Elégie, but there's no doubt that this is the sound Poulenc heard when he wrote the piece, and it certainly works alongside the composer's sympathetic accompaniment.
Perky, delicious, occasionally sentimental fun, then, though the vivid sonics favor the winds and put Bernac in his own acoustic.

The French composer Francis Poulenc only undertook formal musical training with Charles Koechlin in 1921, by which time he had already become identified with Les Six, the six French composers of the circle of Jean Cocteau, including Honegger, Auric and Milhaud.
Initially apparently light-weight in style, the death of a close friend in 1936 brought a new depth to his work, at the same time as the start of a long collaboration with the singer Pierre Bernac.
Poulenc won considerable success with his comic opera Les Mamelles de Tirésias, with a text by Apollinaire, written during the later days of the war and staged in Paris in 1947.

How can one resist the delicate, biting nuances, so fine and personal in tone, of Bachelier de Salamanque, or the subtle voluptuousness of Sarabande, or the vivacity, spirit and sensibility of Coeur en peril, which one cannot disassociate with the incredible interpretations of Pierre Bernac?
This poem about a voyager who has seen marvels is tinged with an ironically wistful, recurring refrain about this being the time to return home — Roussel's favorite leave-taking theme in reverse, so to speak.
Roussel combines his contrapuntal texture with a lyricism of great charm.
