	Pierre Choderlos de Laclos - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
		Pierre Ambroise François Choderlos de Laclos, a French official and army general, was born on October 18, 1741 in Amiens, France and died in Taranto, Italy on September 5, 1803.
		He is most famously remembered for his epistolary novel, Les Liaisons dangereuses (Dangerous Liaisons), a classic celebrated for its exploration of seduction, revenge, and human malice, although the author meant it primarily to reflect, through its principal characters, the reprehensible state of eighteenth-century French female education and its moral consequences.
		Laclos died in the former convent of Saint Francis in Taranto, but following the demise of Napoleon Bonaparte the locals destroyed his burial tomb and it is believed that his bones were tossed into the sea.

		At the same time, the Marquise de Merteuil is determined to corrupt the young Cécile de Volanges, whose mother has only recently brought her out of a convent to be married to a former lover of Merteuil.

		In January 1760 Laclos became a pupil of the Royal Corps of Artillery and two years later, as a second lieutenant, was posted to the port of La Rochelle.
		After miscellaneous activities in the succeeding years, Laclos was appointed an artillery general in 1800, and fulfilled various military functions before dying on 5 September 1803 in Italy.

		I found the machinations of the Marquise de Merteuil and the Vicomte de Valmont entertaining (and so did a friend of mine) – they did not morally outrage me. It’s a great piece of literature.
		It's written incredibly well, the way Laclos manages to create a different style of writing for each character is amazing, and I was absolutely devastated at the end-I won't tell you why you'll just have to read it to find out.
		If Richard wants to write a book on Laclos and get his point of view across then he should do it and not spoil what is an otherwise brilliant and captivating read.
