Private Pierre Cruzatte was of French and Omaha Indian extraction.
In early June 1805, Cruzatte was one of six men selected to accompany Lewis on an exploration of the north fork of the Missouri River.
Cruzatte’s translations, along with donations of useful gifts, were key in helping the Americans recover the pirogue and gain peaceful entry to the upper Missouri.

Cruzatte returned with word from the prisoners that the expedition was "to be Stoped" by the Teton Sioux, according to Clark's journal entry.

Without each of the lesser men of the group, the expedition would not have succeeded as well as it did because it is due to the group’s diversity and specialty’s that the expedition came back with such favorable attribute.
