Culliford, born in Brussels, was the son of an Englishman.

In sad news, Belgian publisher Charles Dupuis died recently at the age of 84.
It was he who, in 1958, first introduced Pierre Culliford (Peyo)'s lovable blue doinks, The Smurfs, to audiences through his comic book Spirou.
Spirou was first created in 1938 by Dupuis' publisher father, who wanted Belgian comics to be able to hold their own against the American powerhouses of the day - namely Disney.

Eddy Paape was born in 1920 and began his career creating animated cartoons in the small Belgian animation studio in which André Franquin, Smurf creator Pierre Culliford and Maurice de Bévère ('Morris') also gained their first experience as draughtsmen.
By the time the studio closed in 1946 Paape was already working for the magazine "Spirou", illustrating the detective series "Valhardi" until 1954.
