Cathedral of Saint Bavo - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The original intention was to ask Pierre Cuypers to design the church, and it's possible he even made a first design, but due to his age his son, Joseph Cuypers, became the architect instead.
Cuypers at first designed a church in a neo-gothic style that still clearly showed the influence of his father, but eventually, after numerous changes, Cuypers decided to focus on a neo-romanesque style instead, with influences from byzantine and jugendstil architecture.
In this period Cuypers was assisted by his son Pierre Cuypers Jr.

Petrus J. Cuypers, also known as Pierre Cuypers, was responsible for the design of many churches in neo-Gothic style in the Netherlands, and as such is one of the leading figures in the proces of catholic emancipation in the second half of the 19th century.
Cuypers introduces a type of tower he would frequently use later on in his career; on a square segment, with small turrets in each corner, stands an octagonal segment which is connected to the small turrets by 'flying buttresses'.
Cuypers adapts his original design for a church in Baarlo, which was inspired by the church of Nieuwstadt, for this new church.

His conceptions concerning restorations has been frequently criticized; restoration seldom implied that the building was awfully damaged, but Cuypers tried to satisfy an idealized image of the style or the idea how the original builders had meant to be.

Nearly all the materials introduced in the building industry during the nineteenth century are represented in the castle, ranging from granite, terracotta and natural stone to asphalt, (Monier) concrete and iron constructions.
