Pierre du Ryer - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Pierre du Ryer (1606 - November 6, 1658), was a French dramatist.
His early comedies are loosely modelled on those of Alexandre Hardy, but after the production of the Cid (1636) he became an imitator of Pierre Corneille; this was the period when he produced his masterpiece Scévole, probably in 1644 (the date generally given is 1646).
Alcione (1638) was so popular that the abbé d'Aubignac knew it by heart, and Queen Christina of Sweden is said to have had it read to her three times in one day.

Biography of Moliere - French Dramatist
In a theatrical period, the early baroque, dominated by the formal neoclassical tragedies of Mairet, Rotrou, du Ryer, Pierre and Thomas Corneille, and Racine, Molière affirmed the potency of comedy as a serious, flexible art form.
He also wrote a number of pastorals and other indoor and outdoor divertissements, such as his popular comedy-ballets, that depended on a formidable array of stage machinery (mostly imported from Italy) capable of providing swift and startling changes of sumptuous scenic effects.
This influence was enhanced by Molière's sharing of the Théâtre du Petit-Bourbon in Paris with the Italian Players, led by the celebrated Scaramouche.

This disapproval pervades the love triangle and story of royal succession in the opera (largely the librettist’s invention) and especially the encounter with Jupiter at the end, whereas the musically expansive encounter with Apollo largely follows Ovid and stresses Phaethon’s gloire and willingness to die for immortality.
Art historian Pierre Marechaux has demonstrated that the depiction of Phaethon’s fall in Bernard Solomon’s highly influential annotated illustrations for Metamorphoses (1557) juxtaposes Jupiter as a rigorous, severe god, and the Sun as a source of Christian redemption.
Apollo’s decline as exemplified through this tale is a curious turn of events in the representation of Louis XIV, as the king’s chosen emblem was the sun.
