The downside of the Dorval designation is that Trudeau’s association with Montreal airports immediately brings to mind the Mirabel fiasco of the prime minister’s first term of office.
Forseeing the need for a new international airport to serve a booming and expanding Montreal, the Trudeau government expropriated hundreds of farms north of the city and built the enormous airport.
While objections to Montreal YUL being named for Trudeau are of a general political nature, some francophones with delicate sensibilities may have another reason to be upset: What will certainly be known now as PET Airport may sound cute in English, but, in French, it leaves a decidedly bad smell.
