Janssen (lunar crater) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Janssen is an ancient impact crater located in the highland region near the southeastern lunar limb.
In the south two-thirds of the Janssen crater can be discerned the remains of a large, concentric crater, the wall of which is overlaid by Fabricus.
The rille curves from the rim of Fabricius crater to the southeast of the Janssen outer wall, extending for a distance of up to 140 kilometers.

Janssen, Pierre Jules Cesar. The Columbia Encyclopedia, Sixth Edition. 2001-05   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-21)
In 1857–58, in Peru, he worked on the determination of the magnetic equator; in the Azores (1867) he examined magnetic and topographical conditions; and in Japan (1874) and in Algeria (1882) he observed the transit of Venus.
Janssen accompanied various solar eclipse expeditions, notably that to Guntur, India, in 1868, where he devised a new method of studying the solar prominences spectroscopically and discovered, almost simultaneously with J. Lockyer, the chemical constitution of the prominences.
He was active in the establishment of the astrophysical observatory of Meudon in Paris and in 1876 became its director.

Henri-Alexandre Deslandres - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In 1868, Pierre Janssen's solar observations had led him to report to the Académie des Sciences that It is no longer geometry and mechanics which dominate [in astronomy] but physics and chemistry.
Such advice was sternly rejected by director of the Paris Observatory Urbain Le Verrier and the French government awarded Janssen a grant to establish an astrophysical observatory at Meudon on the outskirts of Paris with Janssen as the sole astronomer.
On Janssen's death in 1907, Deslandres became director and embarked on a programme of expansion.

Janssen was at first ridiculed since no element had ever been detected in Space before being found on Earth.
Jules Janssen took this photo of the french officers' Charles Renard and Arthur Krebs La France dirigible from his Meudon (France) astrophysic observatory in 1885.
An indispensable preliminary was the virtual elimination of oxygen-absorption in the Earth 's Earth's atmosphere, and his bold project of establishing an observatory on the top of Mont Blanc was prompted by a perception of the advantages to be gained by reducing the thickness of air through which observations have to be made.

Janssen, (Pierre) Jules César   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-21)
Janssen was born and educated in Paris, and built an observatory on the flat roof of his house there.
He was made professor of physics at the Ecole Spéciale d'Architecture 1865, established an observatory on Mont Blanc in the Alps, and in 1875 became director of the new astronomical observatory at Meudon, near Paris.
Having constructed a special spectroscope, Janssen showed that the dark bands in the solar spectrum can be resolved into rays, and, in 1864, that the origin of the phenomenon is terrestrial.

 Who's Who of Victorian Cinema
Janssen presented the photographic revolver to the Société Francaise de Photographie in 1875, and to the Académie des Sciences in April 1876, where he suggested that his apparatus might be used for the study of animal movements, especially those of birds, when materials sensitive enough to permit the very brief exposures necessary became available.
Janssen's experiments influenced E-J. Marey's later chronophotographic work, and his camera used a modified version of the Maltese cross-type mechanism that would later be of such importance in cinematograph engineering design.
For the latter film, Janssen and Lagrange were secreted behind the screen and spoke the dialogue of their conversation as the film was projected.

Janssen is the most likely worker to have first fully realized the telescope, a production of his workshop between 1604 and 1608.
Sacharias Janssen, spectacle maker of the city of Middelburg in Zeeland, Netherlands, was probably the first to develop the method of using lenses to construct a practical and usable telescope.
The respective claims for Hans Lipperhey, Jacob Metiús, and Sacharias Janssen as true inventors of the device are examined, along with the retrospective contributions of Janssen's son, Ambassador Willem Boreel, and witnesses of the City of Middelburg in Zeeland to the investigation of the matter circa 1655.

Initially, he had no money and no command of French, but then he got a job at the famous Observatoire de Paris-Meudon, whose director, Pierre Janssen (one of the co-founders of astrophysics), saw Štefánik’s talent.
At the end of 1907, however, Pierre Janssen died and Štefánik had to change his job.
Since 1908, he has been charged by French authorities with astronomic and meteorological observations (mainly observations of sun eclipses) and political tasks in various countries all over the world (Algeria, Turkestan, Russia, USA, Panama, South America, Australia, Tasmania, New Zealand, Tahiti and others).
