In the third hour of the race, Levegh hit an Austin-Healey who was making an evasive move after being accidentally cut off by Mike Hawthorn in the Jaguar as he (Hawthorn) made an abrupt move to the pits.
Levegh then hit an earth bank, sending him and his car through the air, scattering car components into the spectators.

Pierre Levegh - Grand Prix Racing - the whole story
Levegh's true surname was Bouillon, but he took the nom de course of 'Levegh' in memory of the pioneer Mors driver of that name who had been his uncle.
His handful of F1 Championship outings were at the wheel of the lumbering, outclassed 4.5-litre Lago Talbots.
A brilliant skater, ice hockey international and tennis player, Levegh was over fifty when Mercedes invited him to drive a 300SLR at Le Mans and was made the scapegoat for the horrifying accident in which he was killed, rather than Mike Hawthorn whose true responsibility it seems to have been.

GPMA: My Own Le Mans by Peter Radcliffe
From the "almost hero" Pierre Levegh who in a French Talbot was less than an hour from beating the factory Mercedes team in 1952 when memories of war were still fresh, to Jochen Rindt and Masten Gregory's win in 1965 when the factory Fords and Ferraris destroyed each other.
From the winners to Levegh's Talbot to the 1999 CLR Mercedes to the also rans and the oddities.
My own Le Mans doesn't end with there but includes the books, pictures, videos and the desire to be part of the race which keeps us going back year after year.
