The Resistible Rise of Jean-Marie Le Pen
Le Pen, an unscrupulous but efficient demagogue, was for a while Poujade's lieutenant, and in the Parliament he expressed his distaste for racial impurity with this oft-quoted apostrophe to Prime Minister Pierre Mendès-France, a Jew: "You crystallize in your person a certain number of patriotic and almost physical repulsions."
In the elections for the European Parliament the front obtained nearly 11 percent of the vote (like Poujade in his time): that is to say, almost as much as the Communist Party.
In 1957, a year after the elections, Le Pen split with Poujade and turned his attention to the colonial war in Algeria, volunteering for service as a paratrooper.

TIME Magazine Archive Article -- Tortured Parting -- Jun. 04, 1956
Pierre Mendès-France wrote to his friend Guy Mollet, the Socialist Premier of France: "Any policy that ignores the feelings and the misery of the native population leads, step-by-step, to loss of the Algerian people, to loss of Algeria itself, and finally, inevitably, to loss of all our possessions in Africa."
There Mollet had been pelted by irate French colons, and in Mendès' view he had since given top much weight to their demands for repression arid too little to matching this suppression with a dramatic-enough program of political and economic reforms for the Moslems.
After Mendès' resignation, Mollet countered by scheduling a debate and vote of confidence on his government's policies.

The SFIO (the old socialist party before Mitterrand changed it into the PS) was in coalition with the radical left party of Pierre Mendès France.
De Gaulle was right in concluding that it is better for France to have its own independent force and decisions, but it does not follow that he was then also right in his foreign policy and in fact I think that he was not.
Just knowing De Gaulle's personality thinking of himself as being essentially "France" and not being the shy type, and knowing of his hero status in France,we can be fairly sure that he exerted great influence in or out of government.
