  Pierre Mignard
The reputation of "Mignard the Roman", as he was called, to distinguish him from his brother "Mignard of Avignon", had spread to France, where Louis XIV was beginning his personal reign, inaugurating that system which relied upon the glory of the arts no less than the glory of arms for the exaltation of the monarchy.
In this way Mignard's cupola took on the character of a national victory, as Molière said in his famous poem "La Gloire du Val de Grâce"; thus this very mediocre, though ambitious, piece of painting was honoured at its birth by the most popular and "national" of French writers.
At last, Le Brun having died (1691), Mignard, at the age of eighty, succeeded to all his offices, was solemnly received into the Academy, and in one session elected to all its degrees, including that of president.

 Mignard Paintings Reproduction and Biography
Mignard was a French painter who was the rival of Le Brun but an exponent of the same Academic theories.
Mignard returned to Paris on the orders of Louis XIV and decorated the dome of the Val-de-Grâce (1663), but his principal importance was as portrait painter to the Court.
Mignard was strongly opposed to the Académie royale, and, in spite of his own stylistic origins, championed the Venetian or “colourist” school; this, however, was probably only to oppose Le Brun.

 Mignard
Pierre Mignard was trained in the studios of Jean Boucher and Simon Vouet but he established his reputation in Italy where he worked from 1635 to 1657.
The present canvas is a rarity in that most of Mignard's history paintings were architectural commissions which are now damaged or lost, leaving only portraits, many of questionable attribution, to represent a much larger oeuvre.
A personal message may underlie Mignard's interpretation of Time in the role of a strong but caring parent effectively "grounding" a rambunctious toddler who is specifically identified as the god of love by the inclusion of Cupid's small bow and quiver.

Shut out, in spite of the deserved success of his decorations of the cupola of Val de Grace (1664), from any great share in those public works, the control of which was the attribute of the new Academy, Mignard was chiefly active in portraiture.
With the death of Le Brun (1690) the situation changed; Mignard deserted his allies, and succeeded to all the posts held by his opponent.
These late honours he did not long enjoy; in 1695 he died whilst about to commence work on the cup...

 Nicolas Mignard 6 Pierre Mignard
Nicolas Mignard was born in Troyes (Champagne district, France) where he studied painting with a local artist before going to Fontainebleau to copy the Mannerist frescoes there.
in 1660 Mignard was commissioned by the French court to paint portraits of the courtiers.
Nicolas Mignard should not be confused with his younger brother, Pierre Mignard (1612-1695), also known as "Mignard le Romain" who, like his brother, was also a recognized painter, but was more attracted to painting portraits of the French nobility and upper class people.

Pierre Mignard studied first under Jean Boucher in Bourges, then copied the 16th-century decorations at the château of Fontainebleau by Rosso Fiorentino, Francesco Primaticcio and other artists.
Both portraits already show the quality that was to make Mignard one of the outstanding portrait painters of his time: the ability to catch a vivid and natural likeness, in contrast to the stern stiffness of earlier 17th-century French portraiture.
