A naturalist accompanying one such voyage was Pierre Sonnerat (1745-1814).
During a journey to the Moluccas, Philippines, and neighboring islands taken in 1771-1772, Sonnerat made extensive observations of primitive societies and exotic wildlife, which he subsequently reported in Voyage à la Nouvelle-Guinée.
The many specimens and curiosities which he brought to the king's cabinet further stimulated the growing interest in the "noble savage," a popular romantic image which persisted well into the nineteenth century.

The description of this flag by Pierre Sonnerat on his account of 1774-1781 is apparently in contrast with the description made by Thomas Forrest who in his book talk about a flag with the arms of the Sultan: "the gates of Mecca, red, on a white background."
We say apparently because Sonnerat described the flag as "white and fl bordered.."but he doesn't say if the Mecca's door was fl or red.

The plant cannot tolerate a damp climate.
It is widely held that French naturalist Pierre Sonnerat mistakenly took the Malagasy exclamation "look there" (or words to that effect) for the common name of the indri (a lemur), but Nick Garbutt in "Mammals of Madagascar" (1999) gives "endrina" as one of the species' native names, and he should probably know.
Also it has been related that the aye-aye (another Madagascan lemur) was given its name by Sonnerat after he mistook the surprised cries of the villagers for the animal's name, but this is not generally accepted.
