De La Rue was born in Tournai and became attached to the Habsburg court.
His last patron was Archduke Karl, known to history as Charles V. De La Rue was reknowned in his own time for the richness and intricacy of his counterpoint and for his use of sharply differentiated upper and lower registers (such as the opening of the Sanctus in the Missa Pascale).

Pierre de La Rue - A discography
Pierre de La Rue (c.1452-1518) was the leading composer at the court of Burgundy during the golden age of Franco-Flemish polyphony, and arguably the last great exponent of the medieval aesthetic in music.
La Rue's mass cycles in the fully developed post-Obrecht style dwarf Josquin's in number, and while the priorities of text-setting and simpler expression in Josquin's late output became the rallying cry of the high Renaissance, it was La Rue whose output punctuated the end of the medieval era.
La Rue was probably born in Tournai, and a recently discovered reference to him as a professional singer in Brussels in 1469/70 suggests a date of birth closer to 1452 than the traditionally ascribed 1460.

 [No title]
Although de la Rue follows a traditional cantus firmus structure in the bass voice, he also employs a variety of both canon and imitation such that the cantus firmus appears in the other voices as well.
De la Rue did not write out the tenor voice because it is in perfect canon with the bass voice; the tenor voice is simply the bass voice, but in perfect tempus (3-2, not 2-2).
De la Rue controls the canon so that it sounds like pleasing counterpoint during most of the movement, yet also works to do unusual things, such as sound like a repeat.

Pierre de La Rue - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
La Rue wrote masses, motets, Magnificats, settings of the Lamentations, and chansons, and overall showed more diversity than almost any of the other composers of his generation, except perhaps for Josquin.
La Rue wrote one of the earliest polyphonic Requiem masses to survive, and it is one of his most famous works.
La Rue's motets are mostly for four voices; they use pervasive imitation, though not usually at the outset (unlike the style of Josquin).

La Rue's position within the composers of his generation is still somewhat contested, but he was a major contemporary figure whose music sometimes requires repeated exposure to appreciate.

In 1501 he was a canon at the church of Notre Dame in Courtrai; he retired there from his court position in 1516.
One of Josquin Desprez' leading contemporaries, Pierre de la Rue wrote some 31 Masses, seven Mass sections, 37 motets and 37 chansons.
He was not so much affected by his visits to Italy as were other northerners of his generation, preferring a rigorously contrapuntal style with individuality of melodic line to the chordal, declamatory manner, and making quite frequent use of canon and ostinato.

Pierra de la Rue: Missa de Feria, Missa Sancta Dei Genitrix   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-10)
While most of us might regard Pierre de la Rue as a composer of 'early' music, for Dr Page and his Gothic Voices this is bordering on the avant garde: this recording represents a leap forward a century from the group's more accustomed repertoire, and the results are impressive to say the least.
De la Rue was remarkably prolific; at least twenty-nine Masses can be ascribed to him with confidence, and the Missa de Feria and Missa Sancta Dei genitrix are among the finest.
In addition to the two Masses, this disc includes the large-scale Pater de celis Deus, arguably the grandest of de la Rue's motets and a work full of counterpoint in its three-part, six-voice canon, and three other motets performed as lute intabulations in editions specially prepared for this recording by Christopher Wilson.

This recording includes two works by Flemish composers of the 15th and 16th centuries, Pierre de la Rue and Heinrich Isaac, contemporaries of the great Flemish composer Josquin des Prez.
Pierre de la Rue also travelled, to the court of Burgundy, where he was exposed to Spanish music, and where he met Josquin des Prez.
In addition, the basses are much too present in the mix - in the de la Rue requiem, they are the "lead" voices.

 Pierre de la Rue
La Rue served in the Hapsburg-Burgundian courts of Maximilian I, Philip the Fair, and Margaret of Austria from 1492 until his death, a period of over 25 years.
It is thought he came to composition relatively late in his career, after spending his early years as a singer in various cities like Brussels, Ghent, and 's-Hertogenbosch where records consistently identify him as a tenor.
His works were disseminated in a series of lavish illuminated manuscripts that originated in the workshops of Petrus Alamire, copyist for the Hapsburg-Burgundian courts.

 Program: Piffaro, The Renaissance Band
The La my la sol of Heinrich Isaac, who spent the better part of his career in Florence, and the J'ay pris amours of Jakob Obrecht, who was in Ferrara for a period of time, exemplify this practice well.
His fantasies on this borrowed tune, heard in the second half of our concert, are a tour de force of inventive instrumental writing around the tune, which is heard straightforwardly in the top line in three of the settings, and passed around the other voices in the remaining two.
Modeled after the official civic, chapel and court bands that were the premier professional ensembles from the 14th into the early 17th centuries, Piffaro has nevertheless pursued the instruments and music of the peasantry and of rustic life as well, combining the two milieu to dramatic effect when appropriate.
