Support Academic Freedom and Piet Hut: Background
In the IAS vs. Hut case, the stakes are clearly smaller (no pun intended), but the idea under attack is the same: scientific freedom, i.e., that researchers should not be punished for their scientific interests or views.
Hut's academic performance and his side interests, despite an official IAS statement that the court case is not about such issues.
Hut himself had nothing to do with the creation of this petition, which was initiated by the ad hoc Committee in Support of Piet Hut and Academic Freedom, a group of concerned colleagues.

Support Academic Freedom and Piet Hut
Hut is one of the universally acknowledged leaders in the field of computational stellar dynamics, as well as a man of an eclectic and effervescent mind.
Piet Hut has done outstanding work in studying the interaction of binary and cluster evolution, both by developing a state-of-the-art computer code for numerical simulations, and by investigating analytical approximations to the results of numerical calculations.
Piet Hut is clearly a courageous leader, an intellectual risk-taker and magnet for the intellectually curious in such a range of disciplines that one cannot question his contribution to society and the valuable role that the Institute for Advanced Study will play in providing him a base from which to carry out his cross-disciplinary work.

 Lecture: Degrees of Freedom
Hut illustrates this possibility with a concrete example of three world views, in which reality is seen in terms of matter (modern science), in terms of experience (Husserlian phenomenology), or in terms of being (some forms of Asian non-dualism).
In all three cases, explorations have resulted in the discovery of new and often very surprising degrees of freedom that are part of the reality we live in, even though they may not have been obvious under everyday circumstances.
Hut has been Professor of Astrophysics at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton since 1985.

Piet told us that he had carefully considered the consequences of publishing a paper like that.
He had worried that politicians might use it as an excuse to delay the building of accelerators, and that colleagues might use it as evidence that Piet's research was frivolous.
In his new position at the Institute for Advanced Study, it was not Piet Hut's right to exercise his originality -- it was his responsibility.

McSweeney's Internet Tendency: But Will it Bring Back the Dinosaurs?
It would be incredible." In 1982, Piet Hut and Martin Rees published a paper in which they studied the problem of whether a lower vacuum state could be triggered by a new generation of particle accelerators.
They concluded that it was unlikely, because many billions of naturally occurring cosmic ray collisions in inter-stellar space produce similar or greater energy collisions than those in accelerators, and none of them have yet triggered a vacuum instability.
And the evidence keeps mounting: Since Hut and Rees's study, new particle accelerators like the Tevatron at the Fermilab complex in Illinois have operated for years, yielding important new scientific discoveries without any apocalyptic mishaps.

Traditionally, the interaction of mutually each pair of bodies is considered for calculations, leading to an increase of the CPU time required by N^2, if N is the number of particles.
In 1986, however, this situation could be significantly improved when Joshua Barnes and Piet Hut introduced their TREE method (TREECODE).
This method has improved the increase of CPU time to a N*log N behaviour, so that larger particle numbers can be treated with this scheme, which has become quite common in the meantime.
