Coecke's The Sacrifice at Lystra (about 1534) is a rare study for one of nine tapestries devoted to the life of Saint Paul which are considered to be among the high achievements of the Flemish Renaissance.
Pieter Coecke was born in the Flemish town of Aelst.
Coecke's tapestries illustrating scenes from the life of Saint Paul were clearly inspired by the famous tapestries woven in Brussels after the cartoons of Raphael (Victoria and Albert Museum.

He studied under the leading artist Pieter Coecke van Aelst and was accepted as a master in the Antwerp Painter's Guild in 1551.
Breugel's association with the van Aelst family drew him to the artistic traditions of the Mechelen (now Malines) region, in which allegorical and peasant themes are widespread.
He was the father of Pieter Brueghel the Younger and Jan Brueghel the Elder who both became painters, but as they were still infants when their father died neither received any training directly from him.

A pupil of Bernard van Orley, he entered the Antwerp Guild in 1527.
He ran a large workshop and was regarded as one of the leading Antwerp painters of his day, but his work is fairly run-of-the-mill and he is generally more important for his publishing activities.
Pieter Bruegel the Elder was his son-in-law, and, according to van Mander, his pupil, but there is no trace of Coecke's influence in his work.

This image is part of an extensive frieze composed of seven scenes and measuring about fifteen feet in length created by the Netherlandish artist Pieter Coecke van Aelst.
Coecke traveled to Constantinople in 1533; he appears to have been part of an expedition sent by the Brussels-based Dermoyen firm to negotiate a sale of tapestries to the sultan.
Coecke's widow published the woodcut frieze twenty years after her husband executed the designs created during or soon after his journey to Constantinople.

Pieter Coecke, born in Aalst, had several strings to his bow: painter, sculptor, architect and designer of prints, stained glass and tapestries.
According to the biographer Van Mander, Coecke visited Italy when he was young, where became acquainted with the Renaissance.
Shortly before his death (Brussels 1550), Coecke was appointed court painter to Emperor Charles V.

At the time of Coecke's journey, the Turkish sultan Suleyman was at war with western Europe, yet Coecke records the impressions of his journey with remarkable evenhandedness, Boorsch says.
He describes a Turkish encampment, the dealings of soldiers with local peasants, soldiers at prayer, a Muslim cemetery and funeral, a circumcision festival and the sultan himself on parade in his capital.

The monumental figures are clearly influenced by Raffael´s style to which Coecke was introduced through the oeuvre of his teacher, Bernard van Orley.
