With the establishment of the republic and the subsequent commercial prosperity, came the Golden Age of Dutch literature; this is the period of the masters Pieter Corneliszoon Hooft and Joost van den Vondel, of the homely verse of Jacob Cats, of the comedies of Gerbrand Bredero, and of the works of Constantijn Huygens.
Pieter Langendijk and Joseph Addison’s imitator Justus van Effen, the novelists Elisabeth Wolff and Agatha Deken, were the chief Dutch writers in the 18th cent.
Among the better-known poets are Roland Holst, Pieter Boutens, and Herman Gorter in the Netherlands, and Karel van de Woestijne in Belgium.

Pieter Corneliszoon Hooft (March 16, 1581 - May 21, 1647), often abbreviated to PC Hooft, was a Dutch historian, poet and playwright.
He was born in Amsterdam as the son of the then mayor, Cornelis Hooft[?].
As a poet, he was influenced by his Renaissance contemporaries in France and Italy.

March 16, 1581 - † May 21, 1647), was a Dutch historian, poet and playwright from the period known as the Dutch Golden Age.
Hooft was a prolific writer of plays, poems and letters, but he concentrated from 1618 onwards on writing his history of the Netherlands (''Nederlandsche historiën''), inspired by Roman historian Tacitus.

 Pieter Corneliszoon Hooft
Hooft had been a suitor for the hand of Anna Roemer Visschier, and after the death of Roemer Visscher both the sisters visited Muiden.
In 1612 Hooft produced his national tragedy of Geeraerdt van Velzen (printed 1613), a story of the reign of Count Floris V. In 1614 was performed at Coster's academy Hooft's comedy of Ware-nar, an adaptation of the Aulularia of Plautus, first printed in 1617.
Hooft died on a visit to the Hague, where he had gone to attend the funeral of Prince Frederick Henry, on the 21st of May 1647, and was buried in the New Church at Amsterdam.
