Pietro Cavallini - LoveToKnow 1911   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-10)
Lanzi describes him as an adept in both arts, and mentions with approbation his grand fresco of a Crucifixion at Assisi, still in tolerable preservation; he was, moreover, versed in architecture and in sculpture.
According to George Vertue, it is highly probable that Cavallini executed, in 1279, the mosaics and other ornaments of the tomb of Edward the Confessor in Westminster Abbey.
He is said to have carved for the Basilica of San Paolo fuori le Mura, close to Rome, a crucifix which spoke in 1370 to a female saint.

 Lingua franca -- May 1998
"Pietro Cavallini's frescoes in the Roman church of Santa Lucia," he says, "display precisely the same mode of applying color--the spreading of thread-thin brushstrokes to create a subtle weaving effect." Giotto's technique, Zanardi continues, was wholly different.
A letter written by Cavallini's son around 1340 claims that his father "lived to be 100 years old, and always went about with an uncovered head, even in winter." A few commission statements have been found.
The Cavallinis that survive are primarily mosaics--in particular, a lush series at the church of Santa Maria, in the Trastevere section of Rome.

 Pietro Cavallini
The frescoes, painted by Pietro Cavallini between 1280 to 1300 -- years before the Assisi frescoes attributed to Giotto -- were recently found by a Rome University team restoring a chapel in the church of Santa Maria in Ara Coeli on the Capitoline hill.
Although Cavallini is under-represented and little known in our time, he was certainly famous and considered the best fresco artist in his own day.
Ironically, it was this early fame that caused most of his work to disappear: his frescoes were in all of the most famous churches, and those were the ones which were also most likely to be rebuilt or redecorated in later days.

 Biography
His two major surviving works are mosaics of the Life of the Virgin (Sta Maria in Trastevere, signed and dated 1291) and a fragmentary fresco cycle, the most important part of which is a Last Judgment (Sta Cecilia in Trastevere, Rome).
In 1308 Cavallini was in Naples serving the Angevin kings, and was probably responsible for the design and possibly some of the execution of a fresco cycle in Sta Maria Donnaregina.
Although he is such an obscure figure, Cavallini occupies an important place in the history of Italian painting.

History of Art: Gothic Art-Ambrogio Lorenzetti,Pietro Lorenzetti
Although deeply indebted to the art of Duccio and his circle and inclined to be retrospective, he was an artist of considerable originality: his naturalistic figures, influenced by sculpture, are imbued with intense emotions and set within innovative illusionistic space.
It is not certain whether he is identifiable with a ‘Petruccio Lorenzo’ who, on 25 February 1306, was paid 1 lira and 10 soldi for a picture on a ‘panel’ of the nine governors of Siena.
Although Pietro’s earliest surviving works date to the second decade of the 14th century, the course of his career suggests that he was an independent master by the first decade.

From the historical and fascinating Italian region of Venice emerged a multitude of noble families, including the distinguished Cavallini family.
Although people were originally known only by a single name, it became necessary for people to adapt a second name to identify themselves as populations grew and travel became more frequent.

Abbazia di San Pietro in Valle, Italy. Travel guide & tourist information by Hostelbookers.com
A worthwhile excursion from Terni, particularly if you're making for Norcia and the Valnerina from the south rather than Spoleto, is the Abbazia di San Pietro in Valle (daily: 10am–noon & 2–5pm; free), 18km from Terni and signposted from Colleponte.
It's set high on the hillside near a thickly wooded cleft, the first impression being of a dull blockhouse affair, with nothing to hint at the splendour of the Lombard and Byzantine art inside.
The faded frescoes (1190) that cover the body of the main church are the first tentative attempts to create a distinctively Italian art and move away from the stylized influence of Byzantine painting, an influence that nonetheless was to prevail until the advent of Pietro Cavallini, Cimabue and Giotto a century later.
