Petro II Orseolo was the Doge of Venice from 991 to 1009.
Following repeated complaints by the Dalmatian city-states in 997, the Venetian fleet under Orseolo attacked the Slavic pirates of Narenta on the Ascension Day in 998 and finally defeated them.
Pietro then took the title of Dux Dalmatianorum (Duke of Dalmatia), associating it with his son.

At first Venetian merchants were willing to pay annual tribute to keep their shipping safe from the "Narentine" (Neretvan) pirates of the Dalmatian coast, but in 998 "Curzola" came under direct Venetian control, and eventually Venetian diplomacy and force established hegemony in the upper Adriatic.
Doge Pietro II Orseolo assumed the title Dux Dalmatinorum ("Duke of the Dalmatians").
During the 12th century the hereditary Counts of Curzola were loosely governed from Hungary and from Genoa in turn, and also enjoyed a brief period of independence; but after 1255 its hereditary counts again submitted to Venice.

Pietro I Orseolo fu eletto a doge nella basilica dell'Olivolo probabilmente per due motivi: il primo perchè discendente della romana "gens ursia" ed il secondo (ma non è dato averne certezza) perchè mise a disposizione la sua casa (poichè limitrofa) per l'attacco incendiario al palazzo ducale del suo predecessore.
Pietro II Orseolo morì di morte naturale nel settembre del 1009.

I suppose that the Byzantine emperors sustained both Croatian kings and Venetian doges as governing the Dalmatian coast.
After the campaign in 1000, the Doge Pietro II Orseolo (991-1008) conquered Istria and Dalmatia, expelling the Slavic pirates from the area.
Of course, it was not an entirely Venetian enterprise, since in 992, Basil II offered to the Doge, beside commercial privileges, the authorization to protect the cities from the Dalmatian "thema".

The doge Pietro II Orseolo finally crushed them in 998 and assumed the title duke of the Dalmatians (Dux Dalmatianorum), though without prejudice to Byzantine suzerainty.
After the World War II, both of those territories were added to the Croatia, then a socialist republic in socialist Yugoslavia.
