Pietro Antonio Locatelli (September 3, 1695–March 30, 1764) was an Italian composer and violinist.
Locatelli was a master at the violin, said to have never played a wrong note -- except once, when his little finger slipped and got stuck in the bridge of his instrument.
Locatelli's works are mainly for the violin, an instrument on which he was a virtuoso.

The Italian composer and violinist Pietro Antonio Locatelli was born in Bergamo, later moving to Rome, where he might have studied with Corelli, but more probably was a pupil of Valentini.
Locatelli combines the Roman style of Corelli with, in his solo concertos, the virtuosity of Vivaldi in Venice.
Locatelli also published sets of trio sonatas and solo sonatas, including a set of the latter for flute and basso continuo.

Pietro Antonio Locatelli was born in 1695 in the Italian city of Bergamo.
Locatelli preferred not to have any professional musicians attend, a suspected reason for which is that he was afraid of their imitating him.
Since Locatelli was not tied to the tastes of clients, he was entirely free to compose in any style of his own choosing.

Pietro Locatelli must have been the Jimi Hendrix of his time.
In these concertos, Locatelli not only explores the violin as a virtuoso instrument of music, he uses it to paint a complete environment.
For the Locatelli project, a bank provided the necessary sponsorship funding to allow young Luxemburgian violinist Sandrine Cantoreggi to ask the Latvian Philharmonic Chamber Orchestra to join the project with fellow Luxemburg director Carlo Jans at the helm.

Locatelli was born in Bergamo, Italy, so the connection here is a strong one.
Locatelli composed many concerto grossi, and these six three-movement (fast-slow-fast) works titled “Introductions” are in that style.
The “Theatrics” of their title indicates the composer’s strong attraction to opera, and the works are thought to have been originally intended to serve as overtures to operas by other composers.

Locatelli is, of course, an exceptionally tasty sheep's milk cheese related to Romano, but he was also a very important and talented composer of violin music.
Of course, instrumental virtuosity alone doesn't make a great composer, but in this collection of concertos and orchestra suites we see that the challenge of writing other types of music didn't faze Locatelli composer one bit.
The so-called "Theatrical Introductions" are what we now call "overtures" or "suites," consisting largely of dance movements arranged in a pleasing sequence.
